Raman Parimala (born 21 November 1948)[1] is an Indianmathematician known for her contributions toalgebra. She is the Arts & Sciences Distinguished Professor ofmathematics atEmory University.[2] For many years, she was a professor atTata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR),Mumbai.

She was on the Mathematical Sciences jury for theInfosys Prize 2019—2022[3] and was on theAbel Prize selection Committee 2021–2023.[4]

Background

[edit]

Parimala was born and raised inTamil Nadu, India.[5] She studied in Saradha Vidyalaya Girls' High School and Stella Maris College atChennai. She received her M.Sc. fromMadras University (1970) and Ph.D. from theUniversity of Mumbai (1976); her advisor wasR. Sridharan from TIFR.[6]

In 1987, she won the highest science award in India: TheShanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize.[7]

She is a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (New Delhi).[7]
