Raman Parimala (born 21 November 1948)[1] is an Indianmathematician known for her contributions toalgebra. She is the Arts & Sciences Distinguished Professor ofmathematics atEmory University.[2] For many years, she was a professor atTata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR),Mumbai.
She was on the Mathematical Sciences jury for theInfosys Prize 2019—2022[3] and was on theAbel Prize selection Committee 2021–2023.[4]
Parimala was born and raised inTamil Nadu, India.[5] She studied in Saradha Vidyalaya Girls' High School and Stella Maris College atChennai. She received her M.Sc. fromMadras University (1970) and Ph.D. from theUniversity of Mumbai (1976); her advisor wasR. Sridharan from TIFR.[6]
In 1987, she won the highest science award in India: TheShanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize.[7]
She is a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (New Delhi).[7]
OnNational Science Day in 2020,Smriti Irani, head of the Ministry of Women and Child Development of theGovernment of India, announced the establishment of chairs at institutes across India in the names of Raman Parimala and other ten Indian women scientists.[9]Parimala was aninvited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians inZurich in 1994 and gave a talkStudy of quadratic forms — some connections with geometryArchived 3 October 2016 at theWayback Machine. She gave a plenary addressArithmetic of linear algebraic groups over two dimensional fields at the Congress inHyderabad in 2010.
