Ramakant Yadav[1] (born 1 July 1957) is anIndian politician belonging to theSamajwadi Party and currently serving as Member ofUttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly representingPhoolpur Pawai and former Member ofLok Sabha representingAzamgarh. He is also known by names likeSher-e-Purvanchal andRKY, he is considered one of the Bahubali (strongman leader) of Uttar Pradesh.[2][3] He is younger brother ofUmakant Yadav.
Ramakant Yadav switched from theSamajwadi Party to theBahujan Samaj Party in 2004 parliament elections,[4][5] before finally joining theBharatiya Janata Party in 2008.[6]Samajwadi Party supremoMulayam Singh Yadav foughtmember of parliament election against Ramakant Yadav and was able to win with very low margin.
In 2009, he won from Azamgarh Lok Sabha as a BJP candidate.
He has a brother namedUmakant Yadav, formerBSPMP. One of his sonsArun Kumar Yadav is former BJP MLA fromPhoolpur Pawai inAzamgarh district ofUttar Pradesh. In 2019 he contested fromBhadohi Lok Sabha constituency Loksabha seat on theCongress Party ticket but faced humiliating defeat. He got only 25000 votes. In the 2022 assembly elections, he defeated his opponent Ramsoorat Rajbhar by 25000 votes and worked to win 10 seats of Azamgarh.
