Rakul Preet Singh (born 10 October 1990) is anIndian actress who predominantly works inTelugu,Hindi andTamil films. Singh is a recipient of several accolades including aSIIMA Award, in addition to four nominations at theFilmfare Awards South.[1][2]

Singh started her career as a model and made her acting debut with the Kannada filmGilli (2009).[3] Singh receivedFilmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu nominations for her performance inVenkatadri Express (2013),Loukyam (2014),Nannaku Prematho (2016) andRarandoi Veduka Chudham (2017). She then appeared in commercial successes:Pandaga Chesko (2015),Sarrainodu (2016),Dhruva (2016),Spyder (2017),Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru (2017) andAyalaan (2024). Singh expanded to Hindi films withYaariyan (2014). She has since appeared inDe De Pyaar De (2019),Runway 34 (2022) andDoctor G (2022).[4]

Alongside her acting career, Singh is a celebrity endorser for several brands. She is married to actor–producerJackky Bhagnani.

Early life

Singh was born on 10 October 1990 in aPunjabiSikh family atNew Delhi[5][6][7] to Kulwinder Singh, an officer inIndian Army,[8] and his wife Rajender Kaur.[9][10] Her younger brother, Aman Preet Singh, is also an actor.[11] Singh did her schooling fromArmy Public School, Dhaula Kuan, and later completed a degree inMathematics from theJesus and Mary College,Delhi.[12][13]

Career

Debut and early roles (2009–2014)

Singh, who said that she had always dreamt of being an actress, began her career in modelling at age 18 while she was still in college.[14] In 2009 she made her acting debut in the Kannada film,Gilli, a remake ofSelvaraghavan's7G Rainbow Colony.[15] She stated that she signed up the film "with the aim to earn a little extra pocket money" and that she was unaware "how big south Indian films were".[15] She won critical acclaim for her role in the film before returning to complete her degree and compete in the 2011Femina Miss India pageant.[16] Apart from the People's Choice Miss Indiatimes, she won four subtitles at the pageant including Pantaloons Femina Miss Fresh Face, Femina Miss Talented, Femina Miss Beautiful Smile and Femina Miss Beautiful Eyes.[17][18][19]

She returned to films in 2011, featuring opposite Siddharth Rajkumar inKeratam which was released both inTelugu andTamil languages, though critics noted that "she got very little screen time".[20] The film was also made in Tamil simultaneously titled as "Yuvan" with the same cast but different director.[21] In 2012, she appeared in a supporting role in the Tamil filmThadaiyara Thaakka.[22] In January 2013 she appeared in aTamil film titledPuthagam. In November 2013 she was seen inVenkatadri Express inTelugu, the latter becoming a commercial success[23] and earning her firstBest Actress nomination at the61st Filmfare Awards South.[24] In 2014, she debuted in a starring role inHindi with Divya Kumar's directorial debutYaariyan,[25] after which her third Tamil filmYennamo Yedho released. By mid-2014, she was working on three Telugu films simultaneously,[26] which were directed bySriwass,[27]G. Nageswara Reddy,[28] andGopichand Malineni.Sriwass'sLoukyam andG. Nageswara Reddy'sCurrent Theega were her next releases. She received positive reviews for her performances in both films.[29][30] She received her second Best Actress nomination at62nd Filmfare Awards South. Her next released film wasPandaga Chesko in which she was starred oppositeRam Pothineni and directed byGopichand Malineni.[31][32]

Breakthrough and success in Telugu films (2015–2018)

Singh was then selected as the female lead in half-a-dozen, four of which are high-profile Telugu films:Surender Reddy'sKick 2 oppositeRavi Teja,[33]Srinu Vaitla'sBruce Lee oppositeRam Charan,[34]Sukumar'sNannaku Prematho oppositeJr. Ntr[35] andBoyapati Srinu'sSarrainodu oppositeAllu Arjun.[36] She earned her firstBest Actress (Telugu) award at6th South Indian International Movie Awards. In January 2016 she signed the filmJaya Janaki Nayaka under the direction ofBoyapati Srinu oppositeBellamkonda Sreenivas[37] In February 2016 she signedSurender Reddy'sDhruva starring oppositeRam Charan for the second time.[38]

In early March 2016 she signedGopichand Malineni's filmWinner starring withSai Dharam Tej for the first time.[39][40] In early July 2016, she signed toAR Murugadoss' bilingual film opposite toMahesh Babu, titledSpyder.[41][42][43] In September 2016 she signed another Telugu film titledRarandoi Veduka Chudham directed by Kalyan Krishna starring oppositeNaga Chaitanya.[44] The movie was released on 26 May which was a box office success.[45] Hemanth Kumar CR fromFirstpost noted, "Rakul plays an author-backed role and does a fine job, but somewhere you can’t help but wonder if she really needed so many lines, especially in the film’s first half."[46] In December 2016, she signed her next film titledTheeran Adhigaaram Ondru to pair oppositeKarthi.[47] After a small sabbatical in Hindi films, she appeared inNeeraj Pandey'sAiyaary starring oppositeSidharth Malhotra, released in February.[48]

Career fluctuations (2019–present)

In 2019, she took on a guest role inNandamuri Balakrishna'sNTR: Kathanayakudu asSridevi. She then went on to play the female lead inDev oppositeKarthi for the second time. Singh appeared withAjay Devgn andTabu inLuv Ranjan's Bollywood romcom,De De Pyaar De, released on 17 May 2019.[49] The same month, she appeared inSelvaraghavan'sNGK oppositeSuriya. Her fifth release of 2019 was a Teluguromantic comedy filmManmadhudu 2, produced byNagarjuna Akkineni and directed byRahul Ravindran.[50] In the same year, she appeared inMilap Milan Zaveri'saction dramaMarjaavaan, alongsideRitesh Deshmukh,Sidharth Malhotra andTara Sutaria.[51]

In 2021, Singh starred in theChandra Sekhar Yeleti-directed filmCheck, alongsideNithiin and inSardar Ka Grandson oppositeArjun Kapoor.[52][53][54] Her Telugu filmKonda Polam directed byKrish alongsidePanja Vaisshnav Tej was released on 8 October.[55] In her review about the film, Neeshita Nyayapati ofThe Times of India wrote about Singh that "Rakul is a delight as Obu and the dubbing for her character seems almost pitch-perfect, fitting right into the skin of the character. She's a ray of sunshine in an otherwise muted film".[56]

Her first release in 2022 came with the action filmAttack, co-starringJohn Abraham andJacqueline Fernandez, a Lakshya Raj Anand's directorial debut. It received mixed reviews.[57] This was followed by the release ofRunway 34 in which she starred alongsideAjay Devgn andAmitabh Bachchan.[58] Both the films where commercial failures.[59] She also featured inIndra Kumar'sslice-of-life comedyThank God alongsideDevgn andSidharth Malhotra, which was a box office failure.[60] Her next release wasAnubhuti Kashyap'sDoctor G in which she was paired oppositeAyushmann Khurrana.Doctor G received positive reviews from the critics and was average at the box office.[61] Rakul also paired up withAkshay Kumar inCuttputtli which was released onDisney+ Hotstar.[62]

Her first release in 2023 was the social family entertainer filmChhatriwali directed by Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar.[63] The film was released onZee5. She received praise from the critics for her performance.The Hindu noted that Singh "shines" in her role.[64][65] This was followed byBoo andI Love You, both released onJioCinema.[66][67]

Singh had two Tamil film releases in 2024 withS. Shankar'svigilante-action filmIndian 2 oppositeSiddharth,[68][69] andscience fiction filmAyalaan oppositeSivakarthikeyan.[70] Both films emerged among the year's highest grossing Tamil films, though the former bombed at the box office.[71]

In her first film release of 2025, Singh played a physiotherapist, dealing with her fiancé ex-wife inMudassar Aziz'sMere Husband Ki Biwi, alongside Arjun Kapoor andBhumi Pednekar.[72] Anuj Kumar ofThe Hindu found her performance to be similar to her free-spirited character inDe De Pyaar De.[73]

Personal life

In 2021, Singh made her relationship with actor-producerJackky Bhagnani, official.[74][75] On 21 February 2024, Singh married Bhagnani in a traditionalHindu wedding ceremony inGoa.[76][77] Up until her wedding, Singh lived inHyderabad, later shifted toMumbai permanently where she owns a house as well.[78]

Singh is considered among the most popular actors ofTelugu cinema.[79][80] She stood at the 17th place onForbes India's most influential stars on Instagram in South cinema for the year 2021.[81]Filmfare's Tanisha Bhattacharya stated that Singh has an "impressive filmography", she said, "Rakul's stellar roles showcase how talented the actress is. She is proving her mettle of being a bankable actor."[82] Pratiksha Acharya ofGrazia noted, "Walking the line between South Indian cinema and Bollywood, Rakul has quickly made herself a force to reckon with."[83] In 2024, Singh was placed 82nd onIMDb's List of 100 Most Viewed Indian Stars.[84]

Singh has frequently featured inTimes' 50 Most Desirable Woman list. She ranked 34th in 2018, 24th in 2019,[85] and 14th in 2020.[86] InHyderabad Times' 30 Most Desirable Woman list, she was placed 9th in 2018, 7th in 2019 and 4th in 2020.[87][88][89] She ranked 11th in 2018 and 12th in 2019 inChennai Times' 30 Most Desirable Woman.[90] Singh is a prominent celebrity endorser for brands and products including Eva,Liberty Shoes and AccessHer.[91][92][93] In 2017, Singh was appointed as the brand ambassador forBeti Bachao, Beti Padhao programme by theGovernment of Telangana.[94] She became the mentor of theSouth Zone during theFemina Miss India 2018 contest.[95] Singh has often walked the ramp forLakshmi Manchu's Charity Fashion show, for theNGO "Teach for Change".[96] DuringCOVID-19 crisis, she provided food to 200–250 families in a slum inGurugram and also did a crowdfunding to raise funds for Covid relief.[97][98]

Singh has an active franchise of three functional training gyms ofF45 Training. Two of them are inHyderabad, located in the suburbs ofGachibowli andKokapet, while the other is inVisakhapatnam.[99][100] In 2021, Singh co-founded and launched an app called "Starring You", with her brother Aman. It helps aspirants overcome the hurdle of physical distances and boundaries.[101] In 2023, Singh performed inDoha for the "Entertainer No. 1" tour, alongsideShahid Kapoor,Varun Dhawan,Tiger Shroff,Kiara Advani,Jacqueline Fernandez, andAsh King.[102][103] In 2024, Singh partnered with Curefoods to launch Arambam, a millet-based dine-in restaurant inHyderabad.[104]
