Raja Nanna Raja (pronunciationⓘtransl. Raja is my king) is a 1976Kannada-languageromantic thriller film, written bySalim–Javed,[1] and the screenplay was created byChi. Udaya Shankar. The film was directed byA. V. Sheshagiri Rao, and produced by A. L. Abbaiah Naidu. The film starredRajkumar,Aarathi and Chandrashekhar.[2] The songs composed byG. K. Venkatesh were received extremely well and considered as evergreen hits.[3]
The film deals with the theme of reincarnation and the lead actors romance in two getups, one in the modern day and another 200 years ago. The film was a huge success at the box-office.[4] In an episode inWeekend with Ramesh ,S. P. Balasubrahmanyam revealed thatIlaiyaraaja had worked underG. K. Venkatesh as a guitar player.[5]
This movie popularized the role of the suaveantihero in Kannada films. The film was released on 27 May 1976[6] and enjoyed a theatrical run of 25 weeks.[7] Similarities have been noticed in the core plot elements of this movie andMagadheera.[8]V. Vijayendra Prasad, father ofS. S. Rajamouli and the story writer of his movies, has admitted that Dr. Rajkumar films were also one of the responsible factors for the content he derived for his stories.[9]

G. K. Venkatesh composed the soundtrack and the lyrics were written byChi. Udaya Shankar. The album consists of five soundtracks.[10] The songThanuvu Manavu had another video version which was not used in the movie but that version went on to be used inKashinath's 1989 moviePreyasi Preethisu.[11] The initial lyrics of the songNooru Kannu Saaladu wasBaare Nanna Mohini.[12] G.K.Venkatesh re-used the tune ofNooru Kannu Saaladu asMaaghamasa Velalo for the 1980 Telugu movieJathara.[13]
