Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) (originally known as Railways Sports Control Board)[1] is a sports board run by theIndian Railways. It was formed as theIndian Railways Athletic Association in 1928. It promotes 30 sporting disciplines[2] and owns theKarnail Singh Stadium inNew Delhi.[3] The board is represented as Railways in theNational Games of India.
RSPB is amember of theBoard of Control for Cricket in India[4] and fields theRailways cricket team in domestic cricket competitions such as theRanji Trophy.[2] The RSPB is anassociate member of theAll India Football Federation and fields theRailways football team inSantosh Trophy. It is also an associate of theBadminton Association of India.[5]
Apart from domestic cricket and football, RSPB has played host to national level events such as the National Weightlifting Championship in 2004,[6] the National Boxing Championship in 2007[7] and the 56th National Kabaddi Championship in 2004.[8] In 2009, RSPB held the 17th Men's and 14th Women's USIC World Railway Athletics Championship.[9] In the run up to the2010 Commonwealth Games, the RSPB in coordination with theMinistry of Communications and Information Technology ran a special train,The Commonwealth Express, which toured India to promote the games.[10]
