Rafiq Ghaznavi (1907 – 4 March 1974)[1] was aBritish Indian and later aPakistani musician and actor inpre-partitionIndian cinema and laterPakistani cinema.[2]
Rafiq Ghaznavi's ancestors were fromGhazni, Afghanistan. He was born inRawalpindi,British India.[3] He was educated atIslamia College, Lahore and could speak a number of languages, includingUrdu andPersian, but preferredPunjabi in his daily life.[3] Due to his passion for music, he sought classical music training fromPatiala gharana ustads Ashiq Ali and Asif Ali and became a popular singer inLahore.[3]
He is known for his contributions inAbdul Rashid Kardar'sHeer Ranjha (1932), where he played the lead role in the firstPunjabi film and also composed the music and sang the songs.[3] As a music composer, some of his important productions includeSohrab Modi'sSikandar (1941) andMehboob Khan'sTaqdeer (1943).[4] In some movies he used all his skills, such asPrem Pujari (1935), having directed it, written both the story and the dialogues, composing and singing the songs as well playing the lead character.[3]
After thepartition of India in 1947, he settled in Lahore, Pakistan and later moved toKarachi.[3] In Pakistan, he composed music for director Ashfaq Malik's filmParwaaz (1954) and director Aziz Ahmed's filmMandi (1956). He later joinedRadio Pakistan and dedicated himself exclusively to radio programs as a music director.[3]
He died inKarachi at the age of 67 on 4 March 1974.[3][1]
