Rafael Delgado, former known asSan Juan del Río, is amunicipality located in the mountainous central zone of theMexicanstate ofVeracruz, about 140 km from the state capitalXalapa. It has an area of 39.48 square kilometres (15.24 sq mi) and, in the 2020 census, reported a population of 24,127.[1]
In 1831, the village of San Juan del Río constituted a municipality. By decree, on November 5, 1932, the municipality adopted its current name, in honor ofthe author Rafael Delgado, a native of nearbyCórdoba.[2]
The municipality is bordered to the north byOrizaba andIxmatlahuacan, to the east byIxtaczoquitlán, to the south bySan Andrés Tenejapan,Tlilapan andNogales, and to the west byRío Blanco.[3] It is irrigated by the Río Blanco river.
The weather in Rafael Delgado is cold and wet all year, with rains in summer and autumn.
The municipality produces principallymaize,sugarcane andcoffee.
Every June, a celebration is held in honor of San Juan de la Concepción, patron of the town, and in December the town holds festivities in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Su nombre se establece en honor al gran escritor cordobés Rafael Delgado Sáinz. Por Decreto de 5 de noviembre de 1932 el Municipio de San Juan del Río y la cabecera cambian su nombre al de Rafael Delgado.
