Radu Albot (born 11 November 1989) is aMoldovan professionaltennis player. He achieved a career high ranking of No. 39 on 5 August 2019, making him the highest ranked player from Moldova. He is the first player fromMoldova to winATP Tour titles in singles (2019 Delray Beach Open) and in doubles (2015 Istanbul Open).[2] He is also the first Moldovan to break into the top 100 on 27 July 2015 and four years later in the top 50.[3] He is currently the No. 1 Moldovan player.[4]He finished in the top 100 in the year-end rankings for five years (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020). His year-end career high was world No. 46 achieved in 2019.

Albot has won one ATP singles and one doubles title, 7 singles and 10 doublesChallenger titles in his career, as well as 14 singles and 7 doublesFutures titles. He has been a regular member of the Moldovan Davis Cup team since 2007 and holds his country's records for the most singles wins (30) and total wins (43).

Albot became a father on 19 April 2020, after his girlfriend Doina, gave birth to daughter Adeline.[5]

2013–16: Historic maiden ATP title

Radu Albot has achieved many firsts for aMoldovan professional tennis player. In September 2013 he won theATP Challenger event inFergana,Uzbekistan, becoming the first player from his country to win anATP Challenger tournament. At the2014 US Open, he won three straight matches in the men's qualifying tournament to gain a berth in the main draw, becoming the firstMoldovan to play in the main draw of aGrand Slam.

In May 2015, Albot teamed up withDušan Lajović to win the doubles title at the inaugural2015 Istanbul Open, becoming the firstMoldovan to win anATP Tour level event. In October 2015, Albot together with his doubles partnerFrantišek Čermák managed to reach the2015 Kremlin Cup final, being defeated byAndrey Rublev andDmitry Tursunov in the decisive set. In June 2016, he qualified for the2016 Wimbledon Championships and won his firstGrand Slam match in 4 attempts, defeatingGastão Elias in the first round.

2017–19: Historic ATP singles title & top 40 debut, Major doubles semifinal

In June 2017, Radu Albot reached the quarterfinals of the2017 Antalya Open beatingJoão Sousa andPaolo Lorenzi, before losing toAndreas Seppi in straight sets. In the same year, he played for the first time in the main draw of all fourGrand Slam tournaments. He was a direct entry into theAustralian Open,French Open andWimbledon tournaments. Albot qualified for the2017 US Open tournament and won two main draw matches before being defeated bySam Querrey in the third round, his best singles finish at aGrand Slam to date.

In February 2018, Radu Albot reached the quarterfinals of the2018 New York Open, winning matches againstBjorn Fratangelo and John Isner, but being eliminated byKei Nishikori in the decisive third set.

He equalled his Grand Slam third round achievement at the2018 Wimbledon Championships, defeating 20th seedPablo Carreño Busta andAljaz Bedene before eventually losing in the third round toJohn Isner.

At the2018 US Open, he and partnerMalek Jaziri reached the doubles semifinals.In September 2018, he reached his firstATP Tour level singles semifinals at the2018 Moselle Open where he lost against the eventual tournament champion,Gilles Simon.[6]

In 2019, Albot reached the semifinals of the2019 Open Sud de France tournament, beatingPhilipp Kohlschreiber,Ernests Gulbis andMarcos Baghdatis, before losing to the eventual tournament championJo-Wilfried Tsonga.[7][8]

In late February, he won the2019 Delray Beach Open, making history as the firstMoldovan to win an ATP singles title, knocking outIvo Karlović,Nick Kyrgios,Steve Johnson andMackenzie McDonald. In the final he defeatedDan Evans of Great Britain in a closely fought three-set match.[9][10][11] At the same tournament he reached the semifinals in doubles with JapaneseYoshihito Nishioka.[12]In March inMiami continuing his great form, he took a set off the eventual championRoger Federer in his second round match.[13][14]

In May, Albot reached the2019 Geneva Open semifinal losing in the penultimate round againstNicolás Jarry.[15] In August, seeded seventh, he reached his third semifinal of 2019 at the2019 Los Cabos Open,[16] losing to fifth seed Taylor Fritz.[17] His three victories in the tournament put him at a total of 25 for the year, his mostATP Tour wins in a season. As a result he reached his highest career ranking in the top 40 of world No. 39 on 5 August 2019.

2020–21: Inaugural ATP Cup, Australian Open third round, struggles, out of top 100

In January 2020, Albot participated in the Inaugural2020 ATP Cup in the Group stage as a member of theMoldovan team. He snapped an eighth -match losing streak at the opening round ofRoland Garros and reached the quarterfinals at the2020 Sofia Open with a win over top seedDenis Shapovalov.[18]

Albot reached the third round at the2021 Australian Open for the first time at this Major where he defeated World No. 13Roberto Bautista Agut en route before losing to 24th seedCasper Ruud.[19] In February, seeded sixth, he made his first semifinal in 19 months and of the year at the2021 Singapore Tennis Open where he lost toAlexander Bublik.[20][21]After eight first rounds losses he dropped out of the top 100 on 2 August 2021.

He finished with a 6-15 ATP win–loss record for the 2021 season, ranked No. 125.

2022–23: Major third round, back to Masters & top 100, 100th win

Albot reached the main draw at the2022 Australian Open as a qualifier,[22] and defeatedYoshihito Nishioka and Australian wildcardAleksandar Vukic. He lost toAlexander Zverev in straight sets in the third round.[23]

He won the title at the2022 Istanbul Challenger defeatingLukáš Rosol.[24] As a result, he moved back into the 100 to No. 92 on 19 September 2022.

He finished the 2022 season ranked No. 106.

He lost in the first round of the qualifications at the2023 Australian Open to AmericanBrandon Holt.At the2023 Delray Beach Open he reached his first ATP semifinal since February 2021 by defeatingFernando Verdasco,Aleksandar Vukic and second seedTommy Paul, which was his seventh top-20 career win and 99th career win overall.[25] In the semifinals, he lost against fourth seedMiomir Kecmanović.[26] As a result, he returned to the top 100 at No. 99 on 20 February 2023.In March, he entered the main draw of the2023 BNP Paribas Open as a lucky loser directly into the second round, replacing 15th seedPablo Carreño Busta who withdrew in the last minute.

In May, he qualified for the2023 French Open and won his first round match against American wildcardPatrick Kypson. It was his 101th career win, having recorded his 100th match win earlier at theBanja Luka Open in April.[27] He also qualified for the2023 Wimbledon Championships.

He finished the 2023 season ranked No. 131.

2024: Back to top 150, tenth US Open appearance

Ranked No. 137, he qualified for the main draw at the2024 Delray Beach Open[28][9][29] and won his first round match against #NextGenATP playerJuncheng Shang. He also qualified for the main draw at the2024 Țiriac Open and defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic.[30] He lost to another #NextGenATP player, wildcardJoão Fonseca in the second round.

Ranked No. 144, he qualified for the2024 Wimbledon Championships.[31] Ranked No. 152, he also qualified for theCiti Open in Washington D.C., defeatingEliot Spizzirri and fourth qualifying seedTerence Atmane. He won his first round match overFacundo Díaz Acosta.[32]

Ranked No. 138, he qualified for theUS Open, making his tenth appearance, and 30th at a Grand Slam overall,[33] defeatingJavier Barranco Cosano, No. 10 qualifying seedLuca Van Assche andShintaro Mochizuki.[34][35] He lost in the first round in straight sets againstNovak Djokovic in his first meeting with the defending champion. With previous career wins overMarko Djokovic andDjordje Djokovic, Albot is the only player to have played a professional singles match against each of all three Djokovic brothers.[36]
