Rachel Smith (née Schneider, born July 18, 1991)[1] is an Americanmiddle- andlong-distance runner. She competed collegiately forGeorgetown University. Smith represented the United States at the2019 World Athletics Championships inDoha and at the2020 Summer Games inTokyo.

Born and raised inSanford, Maine, Smith began running track in junior high, while attendingSt. Thomas High School inDover, New Hampshire.[2] She went on to attendGeorgetown University inWashington, D.C.,[2] where she became aBig East Conference champion, school-record holder, and earned multipleAll-American honors.[3] After completing a graduate degree at Georgetown, she moved toFlagstaff, Arizona, to compete professionally forUnder Armour.[4] In 2021, she switched sponsorship toHoka One One, with coaching by Mike Smith.

In 2019, Smith competed in thewomen's 5000 metres at theWorld Athletics Championships held inDoha, Qatar, where she did not advance to the final.[5] In April 2021, she won the USATF road mile championship, ahead ofShannon Osika andHeather Kampf.[6] On June 21, 2021, she finished third in the2020 US Olympic Trials in the 5000 m, qualifying for the 2020 Summer Games.[2] At the Olympics, she competed in a preliminary round but did not advance to the final.

As of May 24, 2021[update], Smith has run several of the fastest times ever by an American woman: sixth-fastestmile (4:20.91 inMonaco),[7] the 13th-fastest 5000 m (14:52.04 atIrvine, California),[8] and the tenth-fastest 10000 m (31:09.79 atSan Juan Capistrano, California).[9]

Personal

Smith is married to athletics coachMike Smith, the director ofcross country andtrack and field atNorthern Arizona University.[10] They have two daughters, Nova, born in 2023 and Harper born in 2025.[11]
