TheRabbit orHare is the fourth in the twelve-yearperiodic sequence (cycle) of animals that appear in theChinese zodiac related to theChinese calendar. TheYear of the Rabbit orYear of the Hare is associated with theEarthly Branchsymbol.[1] the element Wood inWuxing theory and withinTraditional Chinese medicine theLiver Yin and the emotions and virtues of kindness andhope.[1][2] Bothrabbits andhares are called in Chinese. However, rabbits were not introduced to China until the 16th century, and hares were the onlyleporids in China when the Chinese zodiac was invented.[3]

In theVietnamese zodiac and theGurungzodiac, thecat takes the place of the rabbit/hare.[4] In theMalayzodiac, themousedeer takes the place of the rabbit/hare.[5]
