Raül Agné Montull (born 24 May 1970) is a Spanish retiredfootballer who played as acentral defender, currently amanager.

Playing career

Born inMequinenza,Province of Zaragoza,Aragon, Agné never competed in higher thanSegunda División B during his 14-year senior career. He representedMequinenza CD,Deportivo Aragón,UD Casetas,Girona FC (two stints),UE Figueres,CD Binéfar,Palamós CF, retiring in 2004 at the age of 34.[1]

Agné shared teams with his twin brother Vidal whilst with Binéfar, and also acted as manager to the youth sides.[2]

Coaching career

Agné began his coaching career atCF Peralada one year after retiring, missing out on promotion fromTercera División in hisfirst season. In 2006, he was appointed at former club Palamós, leaving the following year.[3]

In June 2007, Agné signed with Girona.[4] He led the team toSegunda División promotion inthe play-offs, but was dismissed on 18 May 2009 due to poor results.[5]

Agné moved toRecreativo de Huelva on 1 December 2009,[6] resigning on 14 June of the following year due to "personal reasons".[7] He returned to Girona the following summer,[8] taking them to a comfortable mid-table finish in the second division in hisdebut campaign and subsequently renewing for two years;[9] he was relieved of his duties, however, on 15 January 2012.[10]

On 10 December 2012, Agné joinedCádiz CF[11] as the club neared the relegation zone in the third tier. He was sacked on 18 March 2014, with the sidestill in that league.[12]

Agné was namedCD Tenerife manager on 3 February 2015, taking over fromÁlvaro Cervera at the second division club.[13] On 3 November, after 31 competitive games – one in theCopa del Rey – he was dismissed.[14]

After nearly one year of inactivity, Agné replaced the firedLuis Milla at the helm ofReal Zaragoza.[15] On 19 March 2017, he too was sacked.[16]

Agné moved abroad for the first time in December 2017, when he took the job atNei Mongol Zhongyou F.C. ofChina League One.[17] He and compatriot assistantArnau Sala left the following August, with the teamsecond-bottom.[18]

In October 2019, Agné replacedEnrique Martín at the helm of third-tierCórdoba CF for the rest ofthe season with the option of a second.[19] He lasted only until 10 March, when he himself was replaced byJuan Sabas.[20]

On 28 May 2021, Agné was named manager ofGimnàstic de Tarragona of the newly formedPrimera División RFEF.[21] They missed out on promotion in the last round of the2022 play-offs,[22] and he was dismissed on 15 January 2023 as they wereplaced 12th.[23][24]

Agné returned to Figueres in February 2024, being nameddirector of football andmethodology as the club was now in theregional championships.[25]

Personal life

Whilst at the service of Girona, Agné walked out of a press conference in February 2011 following an away game againstSD Huesca after not being allowed to express himself inCatalan.[26] This sparked a wave of solidarity on the internet,[27] and Catalan essayistQuim Monzó wrote an opinion piece on the subject forLa Vanguardia under the title "! تحيا كاتالونيا حرة" (Arabic translation of the independentist sloganVisca Catalunya Lliure! – Long Live Free Catalonia!).[28]
