Robert (R. W.) Gray is aCanadian writer, filmmaker and academic.
Originally fromPrince Rupert,British Columbia,[1] he was educated at theUniversity of Victoria, theUniversity of Manitoba and theUniversity of Alberta. He taught screenwriting at theVancouver Film School in the early 2000s,[2] and published two serialized novels,Tide Pool Sketches (2001) andWaterboys (2004), inXtra! West during this era.[2]
His debut short story collectionCrisp was published in 2010,[3] and was shortlisted for theDanuta Gleed Literary Award in 2011.[4]
His second short story collection,Entropic, followed in 2015,[1] winning him theThomas Head Raddall Award.[5] He has also published both poetry and short stories inArc,Grain,Event,The Fiddlehead,Malahat Review anddANDelion. His poems "How this begins", "Flutter", "Bite" and "Outside the Café" appeared inJohn Barton andBilleh Nickerson's 2007 anthologySeminal: The Anthology of Canada's Gay Male Poets.[6]
As a screenwriter, he has written six short films, of which he directed two. He has also produced several short films for other directors.
He is currently based inFredericton,New Brunswick,[1] where he teaches in the film studies department at theUniversity of New Brunswick and is an organizer of the annual Fredericton 48-Hour Film Competition.[7] He is also a senior editor and film critic for the web magazineNuméro Cinq, and the head of the Pink Lobster Film Festival.[8]
