Queen Street is a street in theMelbourne central business district,Victoria, Australia. The street forms part of the originalHoddle Grid and was laid out in 1837.[1] It runs roughly north-south and is primarily a commercial and financial thoroughfare of the central business district.
Queen Street is named forAdelaide of Saxe-Meiningen.[2]
The northern end of Queen Street intersects withVictoria Street, while its southern end intersects withFlinders Street. Queen Street bisects theQueen Victoria Market into the dry section and wet section.[3]

On 8 December 1987 a gunman killed eight people and injured five others at theAustralia Post offices at 191 Queen Street. The gunman Frank Vitkovic eventually fell from a building window taking the death toll to nine.[4]
A memorial window for the victims is located at theGeneral Post Office on Elizabeth and Bourke Streets.[5]
