Quanzhou County (Chinese:全州县;pinyin:Quánzhōu Xiàn;Zhuang:Cenzcouh Yen) is acounty in the northeast ofGuangxi, China, borderingHunan province to the north and east. It is under the administration ofGuilin City. Quanzhou is the biggest county in Guilin both in size and in population. The dialect here belongs to theXiang Chinese.[1]

Historically, Quanzhou was under the administration ofHunan Province. It was only after theMing Dynasty (1368CE - 1644CE) that it was removed from Hunan into Guangxi.[citation needed]

Demographics

[edit]

Language

[edit]

FourYao languages are spoken by theYao people of Quanzhou County:[3]

Within Quanzhou County, the Biao Min language is divided into the following five different dialect groups:[4]

Much of the difference between local Biao Min dialects is inphonetics, rather thanvocabulary.[4] With the exception of the Xieshui dialect group, the dialect groups are largelymutually intelligible.[4] A possible explanation for the divergence of the Xieshui dialect group from other Biao Min dialects is increased interaction withHan people in the area.[4]

Ethnicity

[edit]

The Yao people of Quanzhou County are mainly located in thecounty's twoethnic townships:Jiaojiang Yao Ethnic Township [zh] andDongshan Yao Ethnic Township [zh].[3]

Dongshan Yao Ethnic Township is home to the largest Yao population in the county, comprising about 20,000 people across 4,800 households.[3]

The second largest concentration is located in Jiaojiang Yao Ethnic Township, where about 1,900 ethnic Yao reside across 400 households.[3] Within Jiaojiang, Banyaoshan Village (Chinese:板瑶山村) is home to about 120 ethnic Yao, residing across 20 households.[3]

While not an ethnic township, thetown ofShaoshui [zh] also has a sizable Yao community, numbering about 900 people across 190 households.[3] Within Shaoshui, Tongyou Village (Chinese:桐油村) hosts about 200 ethnic Yao across 60 households.[3]
