Qaqulluit (Inuktitut syllabics:ᖃᖁᓪᓗᐃᑦ[1] formerlyQaqaluit Island[2] (meaning: "northern fulmar"[3]) is one of easternBaffin Island's small, offshore, uninhabited islands, located in theArctic Archipelago in theQikiqtaaluk Region,Nunavut. Along withPaallavvik andAggijjat, it is situated offCumberland Peninsula withinDavis Strait's Merchants Bay.[4]
Its characteristics include coastal cliffs and rocky shores.
Harp seal,polar bear, andwalrus frequent the area.
The newly createdQaqulluit National Wildlife Area[3] extends beyond the island to also include theReid Bay Important Bird Area onBaffin Island.[5]
Located on the island's northeastern tip,Nuvuttiq is another a CanadianImportant Bird Area, anInternational Biological Program site and aKey Terrestrial Bird Habitat site.[6]
