Pushkar Singh Dhami (born 16 September 1975) is an Indian politician and a member of theBharatiya Janata Party, serving as theChief Minister ofUttarakhand since 4 July 2021. He represents theChampawat Assembly constituency in theUttarakhand Legislative Assembly since 2022 and previously fromKhatima from 2012 to 2022. He lost his seat in 2022 elections, but was re-elected as Chief Minister by BJP MLAs. He was later elected toUttarakhand Legislative Assembly following a by-election. He is the only Chief Minister of the state to assume a second consecutive term as CM, since its creation.[1][2]

Personal life and career

Pushkar Singh Dhami was born in aKumaoniRajput family at Tundi village ofPithoragarh district.[3][4] His ancestral village is Harkhola,Pithoragarh district in the state ofUttarakhand. His family moved to Tundi village where he studied until 5th standard after that they moved to Nagla Tarai Bhabar, Khatima. His father was in the army and retired as aSubedar.[5]

He graduated fromLucknow University in Human Resource Management & Industrial Relations and pursuedLL.B. fromUniversity of Lucknow.[6] He has also served as an adviser toBhagat Singh Koshiyari while Koshiyari was serving as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand in 2001.[7][8]

Political career

Dhami started his political career in the year 1990 withAkhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of theBharatiya Janata Party.Pushkar Singh Dhami worked as a political adviser to former CMBhagat Singh Koshyari.[9] He also served as the state president of theBharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha until 2008. During this time, he was credited with asserting the state government to reserve 70% of opportunities for the local youth in industries of the state.[10] On 2021, in political crisis Dhami to be considered as the deputy chief minister.

Chief Minister of Uttarakhand

On 3 July 2021, he was sworn in as the 10thChief Minister of Uttarakhand, after the resignation ofTirath Singh Rawat due to political crisis regarding his legitimacy to hold the post and assumed office on 4 July 2021.[11][12] He became the youngest Chief Minister ofUttarakhand at the age of 45.[9]

Controversies

In December 2021,Vinod Prasad Raturi was removed from his position as Secretary of the Sanskrit Education Department during the tenure of Chief MinisterPushkar Singh Dhami despite being absent from a cabinet meeting due to official government visits in Chamoli–Rudraprayag. Reports noted that the removal occurred without any prior inquiry.[13]

Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Current chief minister and a CM face, lost the 2021 legislative election against congress candidate,Bhuwan Chandra Kapri fromKhatima constituency ofUttarakhand legislative assembly. He was re-elected for the position of Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on 21 March 2022.[14]On 3 June 2022 he successfully won theChampawat Assembly bypoll, which was allowed by the resignation of incumbentKailash Chandra Gahtori.[2][15]
