Pullen House is a historicVictorian plantation house located in northernRaleigh, North Carolina. The house was the center of a smallplantation inWake County that was owned by the Pullen family.Richard Stanhope Pullen, a local businessman and philanthropist who funded the construction ofPullen Park, was born here.

History

[edit]

Built in the 1800s, it was a modestplantation owned by the Pullen family.[1][2] The house, now located within theRaleigh city limits, was part of the Neuse Community, named after the nearbyNeuse River.[3][4]Richard Stanhope Pullen, a noted businessman and philanthropist, was born at the house in 1822.[5][2] Pullen was responsible for funding the development ofPullen Park and was a major benefactor ofNorth Carolina State College, thePeace Institute, theNorth Carolina Woman's College, andEdenton Street United Methodist Church.[6] The house includes a 600-square foot formal living room.[7]

In 1999, Pullen House was moved a quarter mile east of its original location at the intersection of Falls of Neuse Road and Durant Road to make room for theWakeMed North Hospital.[5][1] WakeMed purchased the 17-acre lot that the house was built on for $5 million.[1] The house, owned by the Alma Wynne Edgerton Memorial Foundation, was not part of the purchase, and was therefore moved to a new location.[1]

Pullen House is now used as an event and wedding venue.[7]
