The party'sprogressive platform centers on thenationalization ofenergy, petroleum, rail, andshipping which, as formerstate enterprises, had beenprivatized during the 1989–99 administration of PresidentCarlos Menem.[7][8]

Proyecto Sur maintains athink tank, theInstituto Argentino de Propuestas (Argentine Institute for Proposals).[9]

History

[edit]
Fernando "Pino" Solanas

The party developed in part from theFrente Grande, a political party established in 1993 by with CongressmanCarlos Álvarez, film-makerPino Solanas, human rights activistGraciela Fernández Meijide and others disaffected with PresidentCarlos Menem's turn to the right.[10] Solanas, a renowned film maker in thepolitical cinema genre, establishedProyecto Sur in August 2007 ahead of his campaign for president in that year'sgeneral elections.[11] The ticket obtained fifth place (1.6%) and elected one Congressman.[12] Solanas, however, was satisfied with the results, and declared that"we have planted our flag."[13]

Proyecto Sur elected four Congressmen in the2009 mid-term elections.[14] The party later sealed alliances with a number of other left-wing parties, includingSolidarity and Equality, theMST,Free of the South Movement, theAuthentic Socialist Party, and theRevolutionary Communist Party. These alliances brought the Proyecto Sur-ledcaucus in theArgentine Chamber of Deputies to 11 members.[15] Solanas entered into an alliance with theSocialist Party-ledBroad Progressive Front in June 2011 for thegeneral elections. He left the Front within a week, however, and announced the party and its allies would run on an independent Proyecto Sur slate; he nominated CongresswomanAlcira Argumedo as their candidate for president.[16]

The party was part of theFrente de Todos coalition during the2019 Argentine general election.
