Propagule

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Biological material that propagates an organism to the next life cycle stage
Look uppropagule in Wiktionary, the free dictionary.

Inbiology, apropagule is any material that functions in propagating an organism to the next stage in its life cycle, such as bydispersal. The propagule is usually distinct in form from the parent organism. Propagules are produced by organisms such asplants (in the form ofseeds orspores),fungi (in the form ofspores), andbacteria (for exampleendospores ormicrobial cysts).[1]

In disease biology, pathogens are said to generateinfectious propagules, the units that transmit adisease. These can refer tobacteria, viruses, fungi, orprotists, and can be contained within host material.[2][3][4] For instance, forinfluenza, the infectious propagules are carried in droplets of hostsaliva ormucus that are expelled duringcoughing orsneezing.

Inhorticulture, apropagule is anyplant material used for the purpose ofplant propagation. Inasexual reproduction, a propagule is often a stemcutting. In some plants, aleaf section or a portion of root can be used. Insexual reproduction, a propagule is aseed orspore. Inmicropropagation, a type ofasexual reproduction, any part of the plant may be used, though it is usually a highlymeristematic part such as root and stem ends or buds.[5]
