Astronaut Ryland Grace awakens on a spacecraft with no memory of himself or his mission. He slowly deduces he is the sole survivor of a crew sent to theTau Ceti system in search of a solution to a catastrophic event on Earth. In his search for answers, Grace must rely on his vast array of scientific knowledge, sheer ingenuity, and human will – but he may not have to search alone.

Principal photography began on June 3, 2024 in theUnited Kingdom andwrapped on October 26, 2024.[ 12] [ 13] visual effects were provided byFramestore ,Industrial Light & Magic (ILM),Sony Pictures Imageworks ,BUF and Wylie Co. VFX, withPaul Lambert and Mags Sarnowska serving as visual effects supervisors.[ 14] Chris Dickens edited the film.[ 15]
Phil Lord has praised the collaboration between practical and visual effects in the creation of the character Rocky's performance “Rocky was built and designed by the legendary Neal Scanlon and his creature shop and is performed by puppeteering legend James Ortiz and his team, who were on set with Ryan in every scene. Rocky’s performance is a beautiful collaboration between the James and the other Rockyteers on set and the wonderful animators atFramestore led by the funny soulful [Arslan Elver].”[ 16]
It was announced atSan Diego Comic Con thatDaniel Pemberton would score the film. Pemberton previously worked with Lord and Miller onSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse its sequel , which they produced. This is the first live-action film Lord and Miller directed to not be scored byMark Mothersbaugh .[ 17]
