Pristigasteridae is a family ofray-finned fish related to theherrings, including thegeneraIlisha,Pellona, andPristigaster. One common name for thetaxon islongfin herring. Thetaxonomic classification of this family is in doubt; it was traditionally divided into two subfamilies, Pelloninae and Pristigasterinae,[1] but molecular data indicates these families aren'tmonophyletic.[2]
Pristigasteridae are mostly coastal and schooling fishes of tropical and subtropical seas. Their usual length is 20-25 cm, but somePellona can reach 55 cm.[3]
