ThePrissani (Polish:Pyrzyczanie) were amedieval tribe in Pomerania. They were first mentioned as "PrissaniRoman Empire0" with 70 civitas by theBavarian Geographer, ca. 845.[1] They are associated with thePomeranians, and were based in the lowerOder region around the modern town ofPyrzyce (Pyritz).[2] The mention in the Bavarian Geographer is the only written record referring to the tribe.[2]
In the late 10th century, thePolish dukesMieszko I andBolesław I Chrobry subdued parts ofPomerania, but did not succeed to subdue the lowerOder region.[3] In 1121/22, thePolish dukeBolesław III Wrymouth conquered the area along with theDuchy of Pomerania underWartislaw I.[4] The tribe was subsequentlyChristianized, missionaryOtto of Bamberg celebrated the first mass baptism inPyrzyce.[4] A separate tribal identity, if upheld so far, vanished when it was integrated in theDuchy of Pomerania.
