Priozersk is aclosed city located on the northern shores ofLake Balkhash,Kazakhstan. It serves as the administrative center ofSary Shagananti-ballistic missile testing site.
Priozersk is located inKaraganda Region (central Kazakhstan), approximately 620 kilometers to the south-east of theKaraganda and 747 kilometers fromAstana. The Cambala Airport lies in the suburbs.
Population: 13,479 (2009 census results);[2] 11,033 (1999 census results).[2] By nationality, the city is 46%Russian, 39%Kazakh, 6%Ukrainian, and 9% other. The town is closed to visits by foreign citizens.
Tens of thousands of workers and hundreds of missile experts and army officers arrived after theSoviet government decided to establish a secretmilitary base in theKazakh Steppe. This testing site for the Sovietmissile defense system was one of such centers, which had led to construction ofanti-ballistic missiles and to attain parity in thearms race between theUSSR and United States.
After the Soviet Union's collapse, theRussian Federation agreed withKazakhstan to lease some military units for 50 years. TheRussian Army continues to use the base at Priozersk as the testing site for improving anti-ballistic andanti-aircraft defense systems.
According to theKöppen-Geiger climate classification system, the city of Priozersk has asteppe climate/cold semi-arid climate (BSk).
