Abdul Mateen ibni Hassanal Bolkiah (Jawi:عبد المتين; born 10 August 1991) is a member of theroyal family of Brunei. He is the son ofSultan Hassanal Bolkiah by his former second wife,Mariam Abdul Aziz, and is fifth in theline of succession to the Bruneian throne.

Additionally, he is the founder of Jab Boxing Gym[1] and the Deputy Chairman 2 of theJabatan Adat Istiadat Negara (JAIN).[2]

Early life

Prince Mateen was born on 10 August 1991 atRaja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital inBandar Seri Begawan,Brunei toSultan Hassanal Bolkiah and his former second wife,Mariam Abdul Aziz.[3] He is the fourth son and tenth child of the Sultan. Mateen has three older full siblings:Prince Abdul Azim,Princess Azemah, andPrincess Fadzilah along with eight half siblings from his father's other marriages.[4]

He was raised and continues to reside at Istana Nurul Izzah inKampong Jerudong, Brunei.[5][6] The palace was built in the mid-1980s for the then Princess Consort Mariam and her children.[7]

Education

Prince Mateen received hisprimary education at theSt. Andrew's School inBandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.[8] He continued hissecondary education at thePaduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College andJerudong International School.[3][9]

In July 2014, Prince Mateen received hisBachelor of Arts degree inInternational Politics fromKing's College London in the United Kingdom.[10] In July 2016, Prince Mateen was awarded aMaster of Arts degree in International Studies and Diplomacy from theSchool of Oriental and African Studies,University of London.[11]

Career

Military career

Prince Mateen began his military career by following in his father's footsteps.[12] He enrolled in the 44 week Regular Commissioning Course atRoyal Military Academy Sandhurst along with over 200 other recruits on 9 May 2010.[13] Prince Mateen graduated and participated in the 102ndSovereign's Parade on 15 April 2011. Upon completion of the course, he was promoted to the rank ofSecond Lieutenant.[14]

Prince Mateen was then attached to theHousehold Cavalry Mounted Regiment'sLife Guards andBlues and Royals atHyde Park Barracks, London.[15] He was promoted to the rank ofLieutenant on 15 September 2012.[16]

On 28 April 2017, Prince Mateen completed a seven month Elementary Flying Training course on aGrob G 115 aircraft atRAF Cranwell.[17] He was promoted toCaptain in theRoyal Brunei Air Force on 9 May 2017 after serving as an acting captain since 9 May 2016.[18]

From September 2017 to March 2018, Prince Mateen completed the Single Engine Rotary Wing training at theDefence Helicopter Flying School atRAF Shawbury. He qualified as a helicopter pilot while training onSquirrel HT1/2 andGriffin HT1 helicopters.[19] The Sultan presented Prince Mateen with hisAircrew Flying Badge (wings) at his graduation ceremony on 28 March 2018.[20] In September he underwent Helicopter Underwater Escape Training at the Megamas Training Company[21] and in November he completed the first stage of his training on theS-70i Black Hawk helicopter atCAE Brunei Multi-Purpose Training Centre.[22]

On 30 June 2019, the Sultan presented Prince Mateen with honorary membership in the Special Forces Regiment as part of the celebrations honoring the 58th anniversary of theRoyal Brunei Armed Forces.[23] That same year, he completed the Basic Airborne Static Line and Basic Military Freefall training which qualifies him to perform jumps from aircraft[24] and he underwent Aviation Physiology Training at Singapore Aeromedical Centre.[17]

On 20 May 2021, Prince Mateen was promoted to the rank ofMajor in the RBAF.[25] Later that year, Prince Mateen underwent theAll Arms Commando Course at theCommando Training Centre Royal Marines in the United Kingdom for eleven weeks from September to December and was one of the top ten in the course.[26] He received hisGreen Beret at the graduation ceremony on 4 December 2021 which was presented by his father, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.[27]

On 23 September 2022, Prince Mateen was awarded theParachute Badge with Wings atRAF Brize Norton after completing theBasic Parachute Course.[28] The RAF reported that he had spent the previous two weeks training alongside 64 other new parachutists.[29]

From September 2024 to July 2025, Prince Mateen completed theAdvanced Command and Staff Course at theDefence Academy of the United Kingdom.[30] On July 18th, the Sultan attended his graduation ceremony and presented him with the Pass Staff College Certificate and the Cormorant Pin, which is awarded to international course members.[31] On 6 November 2025, Prince Mateen was promoted to the rank ofLieutenant Colonel in the RBAF.[32][33]

Diplomatic career

From 27 to 29 November 2015, Prince Mateen, as a representative of his father, attended the24th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting inMalta. He was also present at the Inauguration Ceremony of theOxford Centre for Islamic Studies' new building in May 2017.[3]

Following leaders' bilateral meetings inAmman on 4 October 2018, which saw the signing of threememorandum of understanding in the areas of infrastructure, tourism, and defense in addition to a customs cooperation agreement, Brunei and Jordan reaffirmed their longstanding alliance. The negotiations were held at Al-Husseinieh Palace with participation from senior cabinet members from both nations as well as Prince Mateen and Crown PrinceAl Hussein.[34] Later on 19 October, alongside his father, he attended the 12thAsia–Europe Meeting (ASEM) inBrussels, where Brunei demanded that talks to get back up aFree Trade Agreement (FTA) between theEuropean Union (EU) andASEAN.[35]

On 22 October 2019, saw the culmination ofJapan's EmperorNaruhito's succession to theChrysanthemum throne. With his father, he attended therituals, which marked the culmination of a transition that began with his father's abdication earlier that year.[36] Later on 3 November, the 35thASEAN Summit and Related Summits' Opening Ceremony was attended by both father and son atMuang Thong Thani.[37] On 19 September 2022, he and his father were present atWestminster Abbey forQueen Elizabeth II's state burial.[38]

From 13 to 14 March 2023, Prince Mateen took part in a comprehensive tour of theCoronado,California-basedNaval Special Warfare (NSW) commands. He met with members of NSW andRear AdmiralKeith B. Davids, chief ofNavy Special Warfare Command, to talk about potential areas of future cooperation. A description of the human performance program atNSWG-1 was also given to him. The program employs a holistic approach to coordinate resources for the best performance and recovery. It includes strength and conditioning training, sports medicine, performance psychology, performance nutrition, and research and technologies related to human performance.[39]Once again along with his father, he went to the signing of the marriage contract, the royal solemnization ceremony, and the feast and celebration held in honour ofPrince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II andRajwa Khalid Alseif's royal wedding on 1 June.[40]

Sports career

Prince Mateen has represented his country inpolo at the2017 and2019 Southeast Asian Games.[41] Nearly 3,000 spectators came to watch the polo game between Brunei andMalaysia during the 2017 SEA Games, with notably him and his sister,Princess Azemah facing off Malaysian MinisterKhairy Jamaluddin.[42][43] The 48° Torneo Internacional de Polo concluded at Santa María Polo Club in 2019 with the season's highlight event as the high goal Gold Cup final, which saw his team, MB Polo, win the coveted championship for the first time.[44]

On 7 April 2007, the AM Gunnerscaptained by Abdul Mateen ended in a 1–1 draw against team Projek Ikan Pusu (PIP) during aCharity football match. The match which took place at theHassanal Bolkiah National Stadium collected a total ofB$12,192.[45] A charity match between Mateen-led AM Gunners and Sport School was again held at the same location on 22 March 2008.[46]

Marriage

On 8 October 2023, the royal court announced the engagement of Prince Mateen andAnisha Rosnah binti Adam also known prior to her marriage as Anisha Isa-Kalebic.[47] The couple have known each other since they were children[48] and are said to have begun dating in 2018.[49] Anisha has attended several events over the years as Prince Mateen's partner such as hisGreen beret presentation in 2021,[50]Princess Fadzilah's wedding in 2022,[51] andPrincess Azemah's wedding in 2023.[52]

The couple married in a elaborate ten day celebration from 7 January to 16 January 2024.[53] TheMajlis Istiadat Berbedak Pengantin Diraja or powdering ceremony was held on 10 January.[54] Anisha and Mateen wore traditional red outfits and their families applied scented powder and oils to their hands to bless them.[55] The next day was theMajlis Istiadat Akad Nikah Diraja or solemnisation ceremony atOmar Ali Saifuddien Mosque where they were officially married.[56] The highpoint of the celebrations was theMajlis Bersanding Pengantin Diraja on the 14th[57] which was followed by a procession through the streets ofBandar Seri Begawan.[58][59] The events ended with the Majlis Persantapan Diraja which was a banquet atIstana Nurul Iman with around 5,000 guests.[60]

Many foreign royals and politicians attended the wedding includingPresident Joko Widodo,President Bongbong Marcos andLiza Araneta Marcos,Sultan Abdullah andTunku Azizah,King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck andQueen Jetsun Pema,Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong andHo Ching,Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim andWan Azizah,Princess Noor andAmr Zedan, Princess Munira Al-Saud andPrince Mamdouh, Sheikh Rashid,Tengku Muhammad Iskandar,Tunku Idris Iskandar,Tengku Fahd Mu'adzam, andTunku Aminah Maimunah.[61][62][63]

On 14 October 2025, Mateen and Anisha announced that they are expecting their first child.[64][65]

Personal life

Some of his hobbies includeassociation football,horse riding,boxing,skiing,tennis,drums andguitar. In April 2023, he alongside other family members performed theUmrah pilgrimage inMecca.[3]
