Apreaching cross is aChristian cross sometimes surmounting apulpit, which is erected outdoors to designate apreaching place.[1]
InGreat Britain andIreland, many free-standing upright crosses – orhigh crosses – were erected. Some of these crosses bear figurative or decorative carvings, or inscriptions inrunes. There are surviving free-standing crosses inCornwall andWales, in the island ofIona and in theHebrides, as well as those inIreland. Other stone crosses are found inLancashire,Cumbria and theScottish Borders, some of these in theAnglo-Saxon cross making tradition, like the famousRuthwell Cross. Whether these were especially associated with preaching is uncertain. Latermarket crosses were generally not, although all sorts of public announcements, no doubt sometimes including preaching, took place beside them.[citation needed]
