ThePrešov Region (Slovak:Prešovskýkraj, pronounced[ˈpreʂɔwskiːˈkraj];Hungarian:Eperjesi kerület), alsoPriashiv Region[2] (Ukrainian:Пряшівський край,romanized: Priashivskyi krai, pronounced[ˈprʲɑʃiu̯sʲkɪjˈkrɑj]), is one of the eightSlovak administrative regions and consists of 13 districts (okresy) and 666 municipalities, 23 of which have town status. The region was established in 1996 and is the most populous of all the regions in Slovakia.[3] Its administrative center is the city ofPrešov.
It has apopulation of 810,008 people (31 December 2024).[7]
The population density in the region is 90.27/km2 (233.8/sq mi) (2024),[8][9] which is below the country's average (110 per km2). The largest towns arePrešov,Poprad,Humenné,Bardejov andSnina.
The difference between the population numbers above and in the census (here and below) is that the population numbers above are mostly made up of permanent residents, etc.; and the census should indicate the place where people actually mainly live. For example, a student is a citizen of a village because he has permanent residence there (he lived there as a child and has parents), but most of the time he studies at a university in the city.
The current governor of Prešov region isMilan Majerský (KDH). He won with 42% of the vote. In the 2017 election a regional parliament was also elected.
