Portrait of Wilkie Collins is an 1850portrait painting by the BritishartistJohn Everett Millais depicting thewriterWilkie Collins.[1] Collins later became a popular novelist producing works such asThe Woman in White (1860) andThe Moonstone but was at the beginning of his career when he posed for this portrait. he two men were friends and the sitter's brotherCharles Allston Collins was a member of thePre-Raphaelite Brotherhood along with Millais.[2]
The painting shows the influence ofNetherlandish art, and features a familycoat of arms in the top left corner. The picture is today in the collection of theNational Portrait Gallery inLondon. It was acquired in 1894 after the directorGeorge Scharf established with Millais that the painting was genuine.[3]
