Portrait of Richard Heber is a 1782portrait painting by the Anglo-AmericanartistJohn Singleton Copley.[1] It depictsRichard Heber at the age of eight, holding acricket bat. The picture wascommissioned by his father theReverend Reginald Heber.[2]
Heber grew up to be aMember of Parliament and a notedbook collector. TheBoston-born Copley has arrived in Britain in 1774 and settled there for the remainder of his career. Like his contemporaryBenjamin West'sThe Cricketers (1763), it features a depiction of the game ofcricket, growing in popularity amongst the British elite.[3]
Today the painting is in theYale Centre for British Art as part of thePaul Mellon Collection.[4]
