Portrait of Étienne Maurice Gérard is an 1816portrait painting by the French artistJacques-Louis David ofÉtienne Maurice Gérard, ageneral who distinguished himself during theNapoleonic Wars.[1] Both men were strongly associated with the recently defeated EmperorNapoleon and had gone into exile inBrussels following theBourbon Restoration. It was one of the first portraits David painted following his arrival in the city.[2]
Gérard returned to France the following year and was promoted toMarshal. During theJuly Monarchy he commanded French troopsintervening in Belgium and successfullybesieged Antwerp in 1832.[3] He also served asMinister of War andPrime Minister of France.[4]
Gérard is shown in the dark-blue uniform of a general of theEmpire and wears various decorations including theLegion of Honour. TheItalianate background and chequerboard floor make no reference to his career. It may have been commissioned to celebrate the sitter's marriage to Rosemonde de Valence thay year.[5] Today the painting is in theMetropolitan Museum of Art inNew York, having been acquired in 1965.[6]
