Wetlands Portal

Introduction

Awetland is a land area that issaturated withwater, either permanently or seasonally, such that it takes on the characteristics of a distinctecosystem. The primary factor that distinguishes wetlands from other land forms or water bodies is the characteristicvegetation ofaquatic plants, adapted to the uniquehydric soil. Wetlands play a number of roles in the environment, principally water purification, flood control, carbon sink and shoreline stability. Wetlands are also considered the mostbiologically diverse of all ecosystems, serving as home to a wide range of plant and animal life. Wetlands occur naturally on every continent exceptAntarctica, the largest including theAmazon River basin, theWest Siberian Plain, and thePantanal in South America. The water found in wetlands can befreshwater, brackish, orsaltwater. The main wetland types includeswamps, marshes, bogs, andfens; and sub-types includemangrove, carr, pocosin, andvarzea.

The UNMillennium Ecosystem Assessment determined thatenvironmental degradation is more prominent within wetland systems than any other ecosystem on Earth. Internationalconservation efforts are being used in conjunction with the development of rapid assessment tools to inform people about wetland issues.

Constructed wetlands can be used to treat municipal and industrialwastewater as well asstormwater runoff and they also play a role inwater-sensitive urban design.

Aconstructed wetland (CW) is an artificialwetland created for the purpose of treatinganthropogenic discharge such as municipal or industrialwastewater, stormwater runoff. It may also be created for land reclamation aftermining, refineries, or other ecological disturbances such as requiredmitigation for natural areas lost to a development.

Constructed wetlands are engineered systems that use natural functions of vegetation, soil, and organisms to treat different water streams. Depending on the type of wastewater that has to be treated the system has to be adjusted accordingly which means that pre- or post-treatments might be necessary.

Constructed wetlands can be designed to emulate the features of naturalwetlands, such as acting as abiofilter or removingsediments andpollutants such asheavy metals from the water. Some constructed wetlands may also serve as ahabitat for native and migratorywildlife, although that is usually not their main purpose.

The two main types of constructed wetlands are subsurface flow and surface flow wetlands. The planted vegetation plays a role in contaminant removal but the filter bed, consisting usually of a combination of sand and gravel, has an equally important role to play. (Full article...)

Things you can do

  • Create articles: There are many articles that have yet to be started... Pick your favorite and start researching!
  • Find photos for articles: Many wetlands–related articles would be substantially better with the addition of one or more photographs. Feel free to take your own and upload them, or find ones with the appropriate licenses and upload them here!
  • Categorize articles: Figure out what categories to add to each article so that others can find them more easily.
  • Expand articles: There are many wetland stubs which could use extensive updates and development.
  • Find sources: Many of our articles are poorly sourced and could use much better citations.
  • Wikify: Add{{Portal|Wetlands}} to the See also sections of Wetlands-related articles.
