By the time ofAustralian Federation in 1901, Melbourne had become the largest city inAustralasia, and was the seat of Federal government untilCanberra became the national capital in 1927. The state continued to grow strongly through various periods of the 20th and 21st centuries due to high levels of international and interstate migration.
