The Georgia (U.S. state) Portal

Georgia/ˈɔːrə/ is astate located in the southeasternUnited States. It was established in 1732, the last of the originalThirteen Colonies. Named afterKing George II ofGreat Britain, Georgia was the fourth state to ratify theUnited States Constitution, on January 2, 1788. It declared its secession from the Union on January 21, 1861, and was one of the original sevenConfederate states. It was the last state to be restored to the Union, on July 15, 1870.

Georgia is the24th most extensive and the8th most populous of the50 United States. From 2007 to 2008, 14 ofGeorgia's counties ranked among the nation's 100 fastest-growing, second only toTexas. Georgia is known as thePeach State and theEmpire State of the South.Atlanta is the state's capital and its most populous city.

Georgia is bordered on the south byFlorida; on the east by the Atlantic Ocean andSouth Carolina; on the west byAlabama; and on the north byTennessee andNorth Carolina. The northern part of the state is in theBlue Ridge Mountains, amountain range in the vastAppalachian Mountains system. The centralpiedmont extends from thefoothills to thefall line, where the rivers cascade down in elevation to the continentalcoastal plain of the southern part of the state. The highest point in Georgia isBrasstown Bald, 4,784 feet (1,458 m); the lowest point is theAtlantic Ocean.

Georgia is the most extensive state east of theMississippi River in terms of land area, although it is the fourth most extensive (afterMichigan, Florida, andWisconsin) in total area, a term which includes expanses of water which are part of state territory.

Magnapop is analternative rock band based inAtlanta, Georgia. Formed in 1989, the band has consistently included songwriting duoLinda Hopper as vocalist andRuthie Morris on guitar. Magnapop first achieved recognition in theBenelux countries of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg through the festival circuit and have remained popular in Europe throughout their career. After modest success in the United States in the mid-1990s with the singles "Slowly, Slowly" and "Open the Door" and a series of albums produced byMichael Stipe,Bob Mould, andGeza X, the band went on an extended hiatus due to the dissolution of their record label. They returned with a new rhythm section in 2005 on theDaemon Records releaseMouthfeel. The band has continued to perform and record since this reunion and have self-released two more albums. Magnapop's musical style is noted for blending the pop vocals and melodies of Hopper with the aggressive, punk-influenced guitar-playing of Morris and her back-up vocal harmonies.

Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay is a base of theUnited States Navy located adjacent to the town ofSt. Marys inCamden County, Georgia, in southeasternGeorgia, and 38 miles (61 km) fromJacksonville, Florida. The Submarine Base is theU.S. Atlantic Fleet's home port for U.S. Navy Fleetballistic missilenuclear submarines armed withTrident missile nuclear weapons. Thissubmarine base covers about 16,000 acres (6,400 hectares) of land, of which 4,000 acres (1,600 hectares) are protectedwetlands.

Katherine Dee "KaDee" Strickland (born December 14, 1975) is an Americanactress currently known for her role asCharlotte King on theABC dramaPrivate Practice. Well known in her hometown ofPatterson, Georgia, when she was a child, she began acting during high school. Strickland studied the profession inPhiladelphia andNew York City, where she obtained mostly small roles in film, television and theater projects, among themThe Sixth Sense (1999). Her participation in the 2003Hollywood filmsAnything Else andSomething's Gotta Give led to her receiving significant parts in the horror picturesAnacondas andThe Grudge (both 2004). In the period they were released, Strickland was referred to as "the pride of Patterson" and the horror fandom's "newestscream queen", though her performances in both films received mixed critical reviews. In 2005, Strickland garnered positive critical comment for the romantic comedyFever Pitch, and in 2007, she was a cast regular in the television showThe Wedding Bells and subsequently was added to the cast ofPrivate Practice. Strickland has spoken against the emphasis placed on beauty in theLos Angeles acting community, in which she says herSouthern U.S. background has helped to distinguish herself from otherblonde-haired actors.
