Theflag of New Jersey

New Jersey is astate located in both theMid-Atlantic andNortheastern regions of the United States. Located at the geographic hub of theheavily urbanizedNortheast megalopolis, it is bordered to the northwest, north, and northeast byNew York State; on its east, southeast, and south by theAtlantic Ocean; on its west by theDelaware River andPennsylvania; and on its southwest byDelaware Bay andDelaware. At 7,354 square miles (19,050 km2), New Jersey is thefifth-smallest state in land area. According to a 2024U.S. Census Bureau estimate, it is the11th-most populous state, with over 9.5 million residents, its highest estimated count ever. The state capital isTrenton, and the state's most populous city isNewark. New Jersey is the only U.S. state in which everycounty is deemedurban by the U.S. Census Bureau. It is themost densely populated U.S. state.

New Jersey was first inhabited byPaleo-Indians as early as 13,000 BC. TheLenape were the dominantIndigenous group when Europeans arrived in the early 17th century, and they were subdivided into dialectal groups such as the Munsee, in the north, and the Unami and the Unalachtigo, elsewhere.Dutch andSwedish colonists founded the first European settlements in the state, with theBritish later seizing control of the region and establishing theProvince of New Jersey, named afterJersey. The colony's fertile lands and relativereligious tolerance drew a large and diverse population. New Jersey was among theThirteen Colonies that supported theAmerican Revolution, hosting severalpivotal battles and military commands in theAmerican Revolutionary War earning the title, "Crossroads of the American Revolution." New Jersey remained in theUnion during theAmerican Civil War andprovided troops, resources, and military leaders in support of theUnion Army. After the war, the state emerged as a majormanufacturing center and a leading destination for immigrants, helping drive theIndustrial Revolution in the U.S. New Jersey was the site of many industrial, technological, and commercialinnovations. Many prominent Americans associated with New Jersey have proven influential nationally and globally, including in academia, advocacy, business, entertainment, government, military, non-profit leadership, and other fields. TheDarlington's Bridge at Delaware Station was a highway bridge over theDelaware River in the community ofDelaware, New Jersey (known locally as Delaware Station). Formerly a railroad bridge constructed by theDelaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad in 1855, the bridge was sold off when the new one upstream was constructed. Henry V. Darlington, anEpiscopal minister in Delaware and nearbyBelvidere offered to buy the second-hand bridge for $5,000 (1914 USD, equal to $156,960 today). Darlington converted it into a highway bridge, using two fired members of the nearby Meyer's Ferry to be toll collectors. The bridge prospered, becoming a part of State Highway Route 6 in 1927 andU.S. Route 46 in 1936. In 1932, during the massive state takeover of bridges by theDelaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, Darlington refused offers, bargaining his way up to $275,000 (1932 USD, equal to $6,337,744 today) before accepting the sale. This amount was a far cry from the nearbyBelvidere-Riverton andPortland-Columbia Covered Bridge, which were accepted for $60,000 (equal to $1,382,780 today) and $50,000 (equal to $1,152,317 today) respectively. On that moment, tolls along the bridge and Route 6 were eliminated. The bridge prospered toll-free for another 21 years, until the construction of thePortland-Columbia Toll Bridge upstream at Columbia. Although Reverend Darlington was still alive to see all this transpire, the Commission ceased operations on the Darlington Bridge on April 3, 1954, and the bridge was immediately demolished.
