Introduction

Kent is aceremonial county inSouth East England. It is bordered byEssex across theThames Estuary to the north, theStrait of Dover to the south-east,East Sussex to the south-west,Surrey to the west, andGreater London to the north-west.

The county has an area of 3,544 square kilometres (1,368 sq mi) and had population of 1,931,684 in 2024. The north-west of Kent is densely populated, withDartford andGravesend belonging to the Greater London conurbation andChatham,Gillingham andRochester forming a second conurbation around theRiver Medway; the town ofMaidstone is located to their south. The remainder of the county is more rural, and its principal settlements include the city ofCanterbury in the north-east, the seaside resort ofMargate on the north-east coast, and the ports ofDover andFolkestone on the east coast. For local government purposes Kent consists of anon-metropolitan county, with twelve districts, and theunitary authority area ofMedway. TheWhite Cliffs of Dover are the region of Englishcoastline facing theStrait of Dover andFrance. The cliff face, which reaches a height of 350 feet (110 m), owes its striking appearance to its composition ofchalk accented by streaks of blackflint, deposited during theLate Cretaceous. The cliffs, on both sides of thetown of Dover inKent, stretch for eight miles (13 km). The White Cliffs of Dover form part of theNorth Downs. The cliffs are part of theDover to Kingsdown CliffsSite of Special Scientific Interest andSpecial Area of Conservation. The top of the cliffs hosts achalk grassland ecosystem with an abundance of bird, flower, and butterfly species.

The cliffs mark the point whereGreat Britain is closest tocontinental Europe; on a clear day the cliffs are visible from France, approximately 20 miles (32 km) away. A celebrated UK landmark, their striking appearance has met visitors since ancient times.Julius Caesar remarked upon their appearance whenhe invaded Britain in 55 BC. The cliffs served as a natural defensive barrier, reinforced by the building ofDover Castle in the 11th century. The cliffs gained symbolic importance during World War II, as a symbol of Britain's resolute defense and as a welcome sight for the evacueesfrom Dunkirk. (Full article...)

Frederick McCarthy Forsyth (/fɔːˈsθ/for-SYTH; 25 August 1938 – 9 June 2025) was an English novelist and journalist. He was best known for thrillers such asThe Day of the Jackal,The Odessa File,The Fourth Protocol,The Dogs of War,The Devil's Alternative,The Fist of God,Icon,The Veteran,Avenger,The Afghan,The Cobra andThe Kill List.

Forsyth's works frequently appeared on best-sellers lists, and more than a dozen of his titles have been adapted to film. By 2006, he had sold more than 70 million books in more than 30 languages. He also worked as a journalist, first joiningReuters in 1961 before serving as an assistant diplomatic correspondent in 1965 for theBBC.
