Israel, officially theState of Israel, is a country in theSouthern Levant region ofWest Asia. ItbordersLebanon to the north,Syria to the northeast,Jordan to the east andEgypt to the southwest.Israel occupies thePalestinian territories of theWest Bank in the east and theGaza Strip in the southwest, as well as the SyrianGolan Heights in the northeast. Israel'swestern coast lies on theMediterranean Sea, the southern tip reaches theRed Sea, and the east includes theEarth's lowest point near theDead Sea.Jerusalem is the government seat andproclaimed capital, whileTel Aviv is Israel'slargest urban area andeconomic centre.

Chaim Topol (Hebrew:חיים טופול‎; 9 September 1935 – 8 March 2023),mononymously known asTopol, was an Israeli actor and singer. He is best known for his portrayal ofTevye, the lead role in the stage musicalFiddler on the Roof and the1971 film adaptation, performing this role more than 3,500 times from 1967 through 2009.

Topol began acting during hisIsraeli army service as a member of theNahal entertainment troupe. He later toured Israel withkibbutz theatre and satirical theatre companies. He was a co-founder of theHaifa Theatre. His breakthrough film role came in 1964 as thetitle character inSallah Shabati, by Israeli writerEphraim Kishon, for which he won aGolden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer—Male. Topol went on to appear in more than 30 films in Israel and the United States, includingGalileo (1975),Flash Gordon (1980), and theJames Bond franchise filmFor Your Eyes Only (1981). He was described as Israel's only internationally recognized entertainer from the 1960s through the 1980s. He won aGolden Globe for Best Actor and was nominated for anAcademy Award for Best Actor for his 1971 film portrayal of Tevye, and was nominated for aTony Award for Best Actor for a 1991 Broadway revival ofFiddler on the Roof. Gefilte fish (/ɡəˈfɪltəfɪʃ/; fromYiddish:געפֿילטע פֿיש,German:Gefüllter Fisch / Gefüllte Fische, lit. "stuffed fish") is a dish made from apoached mixture of ground deboned fish, such ascarp,whitefish, orpike. It is traditionally served as an appetizer byAshkenaziJewish households. Popular onShabbat andJewish holidays such asPassover, it may be consumed throughout the year. It is typically garnished with a slice of cooked carrot on top.

Historically, gefilte fish was a stuffed whole fish consisting of minced-fishforcemeat stuffed inside the intact fish skin. By the 16th century, cooks had started omitting the labor-intensive stuffing step, and the seasoned fish was most commonly formed intopatties similar toquenelles orfish balls. (Full article...)
