TheBattle of Goodenough Island (22–27 October 1942), also known asOperation Drake, was a battle of thePacific campaign ofWorld War II. TheAllies landed onGoodenough Island,Papua, and clashed with a JapaneseKaigun Rikusentai (Special Naval Landing Force). The Japanese troops had been stranded on the island during theBattle of Milne Bay in late August 1942. "Drake Force", consisting of the Australian2/12th Battalion and attachments, landed on the southern tip of Goodenough Island atMud Bay andTaleba Bay on 22 October, tasked with denying the Japanese use of the island prior to theBuna campaign. Following a short but intense fight, the Japanese forces withdrew toFergusson Island on 27 October. After the battle, Goodenough Island was developed into a major Allied base for operations later in the war. (Full article...)
Bahamian cuisine refers to the foods and beverages ofthe Bahamas. It includes seafood such as fish, shellfish, lobster, crab, and conch, as well astropical fruits,rice,peas,pigeon peas, and pork. Popular seasonings commonly used in dishes include chilies (hot pepper), lime, tomatoes, onions, garlic, allspice, ginger, cinnamon, rum, and coconut. Rum-based beverages are popular on the islands. Since the Bahamas consist of a multitude of islands, notable culinary variations exist.
Bahamian cuisine is somewhat related to that of theAmerican South, with dishes held in common such as "fish 'n' grits". A large portion of Bahamian foodstuffs are imported (cf.economy of the Bahamas). International cuisine is offered, especially at hotels. (Full article...)
