The Hong Kong Portal

Hong Kong is aspecial administrative region ofChina. Situated on China's southern coast just south ofShenzhen, it consists ofHong Kong Island,Kowloon, and theNew Territories. With 7.5 million residents in a 1,114-square-kilometre (430 sq mi) territory, Hong Kong is thefourth-most densely populated region in the world.

Originally a sparsely populated area of farming and fishing villages, Hong Kong is now one of the world's most significantfinancial centres and commercial ports. Hong Kong is the world'sthird-ranked global financial centre behindNew York City andLondon, ninth-largest exporter, and eighth-largest importer. Its currency, theHong Kong dollar, is theninth-most traded currency in the world. Home to thethird-highest number of billionaires of any city in the world, Hong Kong has the second largest number ofultra high-net-worth individuals. The city has one of the highestper capita incomes in the world, although severeincome inequality still exists among the population.

Hong Kong isthe city with the most skyscrapers in the world, even thoughits housing is consistently in high demand. Hong Kong is the second most expensive residential property market in the world and is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Hong Kong is also one ofthe most visited cities in the world. Bruce Lee (bornLee Jun-fan; November 27, 1940 – July 20, 1973) was a Hong Kong and Americanmartial artist, actor, and filmmaker. He was the founder ofJeet Kune Do, ahybrid martial arts philosophy, which was formed from his experiences inunarmed fighting andself-defense—as well aseclectic,Zen Buddhist, andTaoist philosophies—as a new school of martial arts thought. Witha career spanningBritish Hong Kong and the United States, Lee is regarded as the first global Chinese film star and one of the most influential martial artists in the history of cinema. Known for his roles in fivefeature-lengthmartial arts films, he is credited with helping to popularize martial arts films in the 1970s and promotingHong Kong action cinema.

Born inSan Francisco and raised in Hong Kong, Lee was introduced to theHong Kong film industry as achild actor by his father,Lee Hoi-chuen. Lee's early martial arts experience includedWing Chun (trained underIp Man),tai chi,boxing (winning a Hong Kong boxing tournament), and frequentstreet fighting (neighborhood androoftop fights). He moved toSeattle in 1959, enrolling at theUniversity of Washington in 1961. It was during this time that Lee began to consider making money by teaching martial arts, even though he aspired to have a career in acting. He opened his first martial arts school, operated out of his home in Seattle. After later adding a second school inOakland, California, Lee once drew significant attention at the 1964Long Beach International Karate Championships of California by making demonstrations and speaking.
