Estonia, officially theRepublic of Estonia, is a country inNorthern Europe. It is bordered to the north by theGulf of Finland across fromFinland, to the west by theBaltic Sea across fromSweden, to the south byLatvia, and to the east byRussia. The territory of Estonia consists of themainland, the larger islands ofSaaremaa andHiiumaa, and over 2,300 other islands andislets on the east coast of the Baltic Sea. Its capitalTallinn andTartu are the two largesturban areas. TheEstonian language, of theFinnic family, is theofficial language and thefirst language of themajority of its population of nearly 1.4 million. Estonia is one of the least populous members of theEuropean Union andNATO.

Present-day Estonia has been inhabited since at least 9,000 BC. Themedieval indigenous population of Estonia was one of the lastpagan civilisations in Europe to adoptChristianity following theNorthern Crusades in the 13th century. After centuries of successive rule by theTeutonic Order,Denmark,Sweden, and theRussian Empire, a distinctEstonian national identity began to emerge in the mid-19th century. This culminated in the 1918Estonian Declaration of Independence from the then-warringRussian andGerman empires. Democratic throughout most of theinterwar period, Estonia declaredneutrality at the outbreak ofWorld War II, but the country wasrepeatedly invaded and occupied, and ultimatelyannexed into the USSR. Throughout thede facto Soviet occupation, from World War II until 1991, Estonia'sde jurestate continuity waspreserved bydiplomatic representatives and thegovernment-in-exile. Following the 1988–90 "Singing Revolution" against Soviet rule, full independence was restored on20 August 1991.

Estonia is adeveloped country with ahigh-income, advancedeconomy, andEurozone membership. It is a democraticunitary parliamentary republic, with a single-tier local government system consisting of 79 municipalities. Estonia is among theleast corrupt countries in the world and ranks very highly in international rankings foreducation, human development, press freedom, online public services, and the prevalence of technology companies.
