Introduction

Plato's academy, amosaic fromPompeii

Aschool is aneducational institution (and, in the case of in-person learning, thebuilding) designed to providelearning environments for theteaching ofstudents, usually under the direction ofteachers. Most countries have systems of formaleducation, which is sometimescompulsory. In these systems, students progress through a series of schools that can be built and operated by both government and private organizations. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in theRegional terms section below) but generally includeprimary school for young children andsecondary school for teenagers who have completedprimary education. An institution wherehigher education is taught is commonly called auniversity college oruniversity.

In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary (elementary in the U.S.) and secondary (middle school in the U.S.) education.Kindergarten orpreschool provide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3–5). University, vocational school, college, orseminary may be available after secondary school. A school may be dedicated to one particular field, such as a school of economics or dance.Alternative schools may provide nontraditional curriculum and methods. (Full article...)

Martha Watts (February 13, 1848 – December 30, 1909) was an Americanmissionary and school teacher who established four educational facilities in Brazil. Educated inKentucky at the Louisville Normal School, she was in the first graduating class in the early 1870s and became a teacher, working in the public schools. After joining the Broadway Methodist Church in 1874, Watts joined a youth missionary society and founded aSunday school class. In 1881, after applying to the Women's Board of Foreign Missions, she was accepted as the second woman from the United States to act as a foreign missionary and was the first woman to be sent to Brazil.

Arriving in thestate of São Paulo in 1881, Watts' mission was to establish a school inPiracicaba. Within months, though she only had one student, Watts had opened theColégio Piracicabano and began by recruiting a French teacher,Marie Rennotte, in 1882. At the time, most educational materials had been translated into French, as it was theuniversal language of education. The two women worked together to design an innovativeco-educational learning environment, which offered courses in languages, literature, mathematics, philosophy, and the natural and physical sciences. Though criticized by conservative sectors of society and the Catholic Church, Watts gained powerful supporters, including prominent progressive politicians, lawyers, masons, andabolitionists. By the 1890s, the school method and curricula had gained wide support, the student body had grown substantially, and their methods were being implemented throughout the state. (Full article...)
