Lucia of Syracuse (c. 283 – 304 AD), also calledSanta Lucia (Latin:Sancta Lucia) and better known asSaint Lucy, was aRomanChristian martyr who died during theDiocletianic Persecution. She is venerated as asaint inCatholic,Anglican,Lutheran,Eastern Orthodox andOriental Orthodox Christianity. She is one of eight women (includingthe Virgin Mary) explicitly commemorated by Catholics in theCanon of the Mass. Her traditional feast day, known in Europe asSaint Lucy's Day, is observed byWestern Christians on 13 December. Lucia of Syracuse was honored in theMiddle Ages and remained a well-known saint in early modernEngland.
