Canada is a country inNorth America. Itsten provinces and three territories extend from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and northward into the Arctic Ocean, making it thesecond-largest country by total area, with thelongest coastline of any country. Itsborder with the United States is the longest international land border. The country is characterized by a wide range of bothmeteorologic andgeological regions. TheKlondike Gold Rush was a migration by an estimated 100,000prospectors to theKlondike region ofYukon in northwestern Canada, between 1896 and 1899.Gold was discovered there by local miners on August 16, 1896; when news reachedSeattle andSan Francisco the following year, it triggered astampede of prospectors. TheCanada jay (Perisoreus canadensis), also known as thegrey jay,gray jay,camp robber,moose bird,gorby, orwhisky jack, is apasserine bird of thefamilyCorvidae. It is found inboreal forests ofNorth America north to thetree line, and in theRocky Mountains subalpine zone south toNew Mexico andArizona. A fairly largesongbird, the Canada jay has pale grey underparts, darker grey upperparts, and a grey-white head with a darker greynape. It is one of three members of the genusPerisoreus, a genus more closely related to themagpie genusCyanopica than to other birds known asjays. The Canada jay itself has nine recognizedsubspecies. TheCanadian Heraldic Authority (CHA;French:Autorité héraldique du Canada) is part of theCanadian honours system under theCanadian monarch, whose authority is exercised by theGovernor General of Canada. The authority is responsible for the creation and granting of newcoats of arms (armorial bearings),flags, andbadges for Canadian citizens, government agencies, municipal, civic and other corporate bodies. The authority also registers existing armorial bearings granted by other recognized heraldic authorities, approves military badges, flags, and other insignia of theCanadian Forces, and provides information onheraldic practices. Albertine Lapensée (August 10, 1898 – January 7, 1963) was aCanadianice hockey player, often thought to be Canada's first female hockey "superstar". She played for the Cornwall Victorias, Cornwall Nationals, Cornwall All-Stars, and Hull Vestas in 1916 and Cornwall Ladies Hockey Club in 1917, when women's hockey enjoyed some prominence, as most of the healthy men were taking part in theFirst World War. Canada's Walk of Fame, located inToronto, Ontario, is a walk of fame that acknowledges the achievements and accomplishments of successful Canadians. It consists of a series of stars imbedded in 13 designated blocks worth of sidewalks in Toronto, located in front ofRoy Thomson Hall, thePrincess of Wales Theatre, and theRoyal Alexandra Theatre onKing and Simcoe streets. The first group of members was inducted in 1998, and it has since expanded to include the RBC Emerging Artist Music Mentorship Prize competition, which assists emerging Canadian musicians with getting their careers off the ground.
