Introduction  

Canada is a country inNorth America. Itsten provinces and three territories extend from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and northward into the Arctic Ocean, making it thesecond-largest country by total area, with thelongest coastline of any country. Itsborder with the United States is the longest international land border. The country is characterized by a wide range of bothmeteorologic andgeological regions. Witha population of over 41 million, it has widely varying population densities, with the majority residing inits urban areas and large areas being sparsely populated. Its capital isOttawa andits three largest metropolitan areas areToronto,Montreal, andVancouver.

Adeveloped country, Canada has ahigh nominal per capita income globally and its advanced economy ranks among thelargest in the world by nominal GDP, relying chiefly uponits abundant natural resources and well-developedinternational trade networks. Canada is recognized as amiddle power; its support formultilateralism andinternationalism has been closely related toits foreign policies ofpeacekeeping andaid for developing countries. Terrance Stanley Fox (July 28, 1958 – June 28, 1981) was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, andcancer research activist. In 1980, having had one leg amputated due to cancer, he embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. The400-series highways are a network ofcontrolled-access highways in theCanadian province ofOntario, forming a special subset of theprovincial highway system. They are analogous to theInterstate Highway System in theUnited States or theAutoroute system of neighbouringQuebec, and are regulated by theMinistry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO). The 400-series designations were introduced in 1952, although Ontario had been constructing divided highways for two decades prior. Initially, only Highways 400,401 and402 were numbered; other designations followed in the subsequent decades. To this day, not allcontrolled-access highways in Ontario are a part of the 400-series highway network.
