IntroductionWelcome to the Bolivia portal Bolivia, officially thePlurinational State of Bolivia, is alandlocked country located in centralSouth America. In simple terms, the country's geography consists of a westernAndean region and tropical lowlands to the east and north. More in detail, the country features a diverse geography, including the vastAmazonian plain, theGran Chaco,temperate valleys, the high-altitudeAltiplano plateau, snow-capped peaks, and mountains, encompassing a wide range of climates and biomes across its regions and cities. It includes part of thePantanal, the largest tropical wetland in the world, along its eastern border. It is bordered byBrazil to thenorth and east,Paraguay to the southeast,Argentina to thesouth,Chile to thesouthwest, andPeru to the west. Theseat of government isLa Paz, which contains the executive, legislative, and electoral branches of government, while the constitutional capital isSucre, the seat of thejudiciary. While most population and urban centers lies in Andean region, the largest city and principal industrial center isSanta Cruz de la Sierra, located on the eastern tropical lowlands. Thesovereign state of Bolivia is aconstitutionallyunitary state divided intonine departments. Bolivia's geographic Andean-lowland divide is to extent matched by economic and cultural differences such as those associated with thecamba andcolla demonyms. One-third of the country is within theAndean mountain range. With an area of 1,098,581 km2 (424,164 sq mi), Bolivia is the fifth-largest country in South America after Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Colombia, and, alongside Paraguay, is one of two landlocked countries in the Americas. It is the largestlandlocked country in theSouthern Hemisphere, and hasinland ports accessing the Atlantic Ocean through two river systems:Acre-Purus-Amazon andParaguay-Paraná. Bolivia had a population of 11.4 million as of the latest census in 2024. It ismultiethnic, includingAmerindians,Mestizos, and the descendants ofEuropeans andAfricans. Spanish is the official and predominant language, although 36indigenous languages also have official status, of which the most commonly spoken areGuaraní,Aymara, andQuechua. Bolivia was ruled by anoligarchy composed of land-owning and mining interests until theBolivian National Revolution of 1952 establisheduniversal suffrage, nationalized lucrativetin mining and made alimited land reform. 20th century Bolivia experienced a succession of military and civilian governments with the last non-elected military ruler leaving office in 1982. Under the 2006–2019 presidency ofEvo Morales, the country saw significanteconomic growth and political stability but was also accused ofdemocratic backsliding, and was described as acompetitive authoritarian regime.Freedom House classifies Bolivia as a partly-free democracy as of 2023, with a 66/100 score.
