TheBible is a collection ofreligious texts that are central toChristianity andJudaism, and esteemed in otherAbrahamic religions such asIslam. The Bible is ananthology (a compilation of texts of a variety of forms)originally written inHebrew (with some parts inAramaic) andKoine Greek. The texts include instructions, stories, poetry, prophecies, and other genres. The collection of materials accepted as part of the Bible by a particular religious tradition or community is called abiblical canon. Believers generally consider it to be aproduct of divine inspiration, but the way they understand what that means and how theyinterpret the text varies.
The religious texts, or scriptures, were compiled by different religious communities into various official collections. The earliest contained the first five books of the Bible, called theTorah ('Teaching') in Hebrew and the Pentateuch (meaning 'five books') in Greek. The second-oldest part was a collection of narrative histories and prophecies (theNevi'im). The third collection, theKetuvim, containspsalms, proverbs, and narrative histories.Tanakh (Hebrew:תָּנָ״ךְ,romanized: Tanaḵ) is an alternate term for the Hebrew Bible. TheMasoretic Text is the medieval version of the Tanakh—written in Hebrew and Aramaic—that is considered the authoritative text of the Hebrew Bible by modernRabbinic Judaism. TheSeptuagint is a Koine Greek translation of the Tanakh from the third and second centuriesBCE; it largely overlaps with the Hebrew Bible.
Christianity began as an outgrowth ofSecond Temple Judaism, using the Septuagint as the basis of theOld Testament. Theearly Church continued the Jewish tradition of writing and incorporating what it saw as inspired, authoritative religious books. Thegospels, which are narratives about the life and teachings ofJesus, along with thePauline epistles, and other textsquickly coalesced into theNew Testament. The oldest parts of the Bible may be as early asc. 1200 BCE, while the New Testament had mostly formed by 4th century CE.
With estimated total sales of over five billion copies, the Christian Bible is the best-selling publication of all time. The Bible has had a profound influence both onWestern culture and history and on cultures around the globe. The study of it throughbiblical criticism has also indirectly impacted culture and history. Some view biblical texts as morally problematic, historically inaccurate, or corrupted by time; others find it a useful historical source for certain peoples and events or asource of ethical teachings. The Bible is currentlytranslated or in the process of being translated into about half of the world's languages. (Full article...)

Virtually all modern scholars ofantiquity agree thatJesus existed historically. Accounts ofJesus's life are contained in theGospels, especially thefour canonical Gospels of theNew Testament. Since theEnlightenment, academic research has produced various views on thehistorical reliability of the Gospels and the extent to which they reflect thehistorical Jesus.
According toChristian tradition, as preserved in the Gospels and theActs of the Apostles, Jesuswas circumcised at eight days old, presented at theTemple in Jerusalem at forty days old, baptized byJohn the Baptist as a young adult, and, after40 days and nights of fasting in the wilderness, beganhis public ministry. He was anitinerant teacher whom his followers believed to possess divine authority in interpretingJewish law. Jesus often debated with other Jews about how best to followGod, engaged in healings, taught inparables, and gathered followers, 12 of whom he appointed as hisapostles. According to the New Testament accounts, he was arrested inJerusalem and tried by theSanhedrin, handed over to the Roman authorities, andcrucified on the order ofPontius Pilate, the Roman prefect of Judaea. After his death, his followers became convinced that herose from the dead, and the community they formed eventually developed into theearly Christian Church, which expanded into aworldwide movement.
