The arts

The arts, orcreative arts, are a vast range ofhuman practices involvingcreative expression,storytelling, andcultural participation. The arts encompass diverse and plural modes of thought, deeds, and existence in an extensive range ofmedia. Both a dynamic and characteristically constant feature of human life, the arts have developed into increasingly stylized and intricate forms. This is achieved through sustained and deliberate study, training, or theorizing within a particular tradition, generations, and even betweencivilizations. The arts are a medium through which humans cultivate distinct social, cultural, and individual identities while transmitting values, impressions, judgments, ideas, visions, spiritual meanings, patterns of life, and experiences across time and space. The Structure of Literature is a 1954 book ofliterary criticism byPaul Goodman, the published version of his doctoraldissertation in thehumanities. The book proposes a mode offormal literary analysis that Goodman calls "inductive formal analysis": Goodman defines a formal structure within an isolated literary work, finds how parts of the work interact with each other to form a whole, and uses those definitions to study other works. He was best known for serving as the sole anchor ofABC World News Tonight from 1983 until his death fromlung cancer in 2005. The Entombment is aglue-size painting onlinen attributed to theEarly Netherlandish painterDieric Bouts. It shows a scene from the biblicalentombment of Christ, and was probably completed between 1440 and 1455 as a wing panel for a large hingedpolyptych. While thealtarpiece remains lost as a complete set, it is thought to have contained a central crucifixion scene flanked by four wing panel works half its height – two on either side – depictingscenes from the life of Christ. The smaller flanking panels would have been paired in a format similar to Bouts's 1464–1468Altarpiece of the Holy Sacrament. The larger work was probably commissioned for export to Italy, possibly to aVenetian patron whose identity is lost.The Entombment was first recorded in a mid-19th-century inventory inMilan, and has been in theNational Gallery, London, since its purchase on the Gallery's behalf byCharles Lock Eastlake in 1861. Castell Coch (Welsh for 'red castle';Welsh pronunciation:[ˈkas.tɛɬkoːχ]) is a 19th-centuryGothic Revival castle built above the village ofTongwynlais in Wales. The first castle on the site was built by theNormans after 1081 to protect the newly conquered town ofCardiff and control the route along theRiver Taff. Abandoned shortly afterwards, the castle's earthmotte was reused byGilbert de Clare as the basis for a new stone fortification, which he built between 1267 and 1277 to control his freshly annexed Welsh lands. This castle may have been destroyed in thenative Welsh rebellion of 1314. In 1760, the castle ruins were acquired byJohn Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, as part of a marriage settlement that brought the family vast estates in South Wales. (Full article...)

Homer Calvin Davenport (March 8, 1867 – May 2, 1912) was apolitical cartoonist and writer from the United States. He is known for drawings that satirized figures of theGilded Age andProgressive Era, most notably Ohio SenatorMark Hanna. Although Davenport had no formal art training, he became one of the highest paid political cartoonists in the world. Maya stelae (singularstela) are monuments that were fashioned by theMaya civilization of ancientMesoamerica. They consist of tall, sculpted stone shafts and are often associated with low circular stones referred to as altars, although their actual function is uncertain. Manystelae were sculpted in lowrelief, although plain monuments are found throughout the Maya region. The sculpting of these monuments spread throughout the Maya area during theClassic Period (250-900 AD), and these pairings of sculpted stelae and circular altars are considered a hallmark of Classic Maya civilization. The earliest dated stela to have been foundin situ in the Maya lowlands was recovered from the great city ofTikal inGuatemala. During the Classic Period almost every Maya kingdom in the southern lowlands raised stelae in its ceremonial centre. (Full article...)

Carmen (French:[kaʁmɛn]^ⓘ) is an opera in four acts by the French composerGeorges Bizet. Thelibretto was written byHenri Meilhac andLudovic Halévy, based on thenovella of the same title byProsper Mérimée. The opera was first performed by theOpéra-Comique in Paris on 3 March 1875, where its breaking of conventions shocked and scandalised its first audiences. Bizet died suddenly after the 33rd performance, unaware that the work would achieve international acclaim within the following ten years.Carmen has since become one of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the classicalcanon; the "Habanera" and "Seguidilla" from act 1 and the "Toreador Song" from act 2 are among the best known of all operatic arias.
