Arizona is thesixth-largest state by area and the14th-most-populous of the 50 states. It is the 48th state and last of thecontiguous states to be admitted to the Union, achieving statehood on February 14, 1912. Historically part of the territory ofAlta California andNuevo México inNew Spain, it became part of independent Mexico in 1821. After being defeated in theMexican–American War, Mexico ceded much of this territory to the United States in 1848, where the area became part of theNew Mexico Territory. The southernmost portion of the state was acquired in 1853 through theGadsden Purchase.
Arizona made their Major League debut inthe 1998 baseball season when they became the 14thexpansion team. After going 65–97 in their first season, the Diamondbacks were theNational League West Division Champions inthe 1999 baseball season when they went 100–62. They made it to theNational League Division Series but they lost to theNew York Mets. The early success of the franchise was exemplified in 2001 when the Diamondbacks defeated theNew York Yankees in a dramatic seven gameWorld Series in 2001. Inthe 2002 baseball season, Arizona returned to the playoffs but were defeated by theSt. Louis Cardinals in the National League Division Series. Post season baseball did not return to the desert until the 2007 season when Arizona lost to theColorado Rockies in theNational League Championship Series. The following season, Arizona narrowly missed the playoffs, when they finished 2 games behind theLos Angeles Dodgers. In 2011, the Diamondbacks won their division but were ousted by theMilwaukee Brewers in theNational League Division Series. In 2017, the Arizona Diamondbacks finished 2nd in the NL West, and they played in the National League Wild Card Game against the Rockies. Havasu Falls, one of the four waterfalls of the Havasupai Indian Reservation, is located near the village ofSupai, Arizona. It is the second of four falls on Havasu Creek, which empties into theGrand Canyon on theColorado River. The water of Havasu Creek has a bluish green tint due to the heavylime content of the water. The fall is forked and looks like two falls when the river is flowing heavily.
