Algeria, officially thePeople's Democratic Republic of Algeria, is a country in theMaghreb region ofNorth Africa. It is bordered tothe northeast byTunisia; tothe east byLibya; tothe southeast byNiger; tothe southwest byMali,Mauritania, andWestern Sahara; tothe west byMorocco; and to the north by theMediterranean Sea. The capital andlargest city isAlgiers, located in the far north on the Mediterranean coast.

Spanning 2,381,741 square kilometres (919,595 sq mi), Algeria is the world'stenth-largest country by area and thelargest in Africa. It has a semi-arid climate, with theSahara desert dominating most of the territory except for itsfertile and mountainous north, where most of the population is concentrated. With a population of 47 million, Algeria is thetenth-most populous country in Africa, and the32nd-most populous in the world. Algeria's official languages areArabic andTamazight; the vast majority of the population speak theAlgerian dialect of Arabic.French is used in media, education, and certain administrative matters, but has no official status. Most Algerians areArabs, withBerbers forming a sizeable minority.Sunni Islam is the official religion and practised by 99 percent of the population. (Full article...)

In 2011, the thenAlgerian presidentAbdelaziz Bouteflika lifted a state of emergency that had been in place since the end of theAlgerian Civil War in 2002, as a result of theArab Spring protests that had occurred throughout the Arab world.

Serious challenges tohuman rights in Algeria have included torture, arbitrary arrest and detention, serious restrictions on free expression and media, overly restrictive laws on the organization, funding, or operation of NGOs, restrictions of religious freedom, serious government corruption, people trafficking, significant restrictions on workers' freedom of association and child labor. In 2017,Human Rights Watch reported the Algerian government had increasingly resorted to criminal prosecutions against bloggers, journalists, and media figures for peaceful speech, via articles in the country's penal code criminalising "offending the president", "insulting state officials" and "denigratingIslam", in addition to dismissing peaceful demonstrations as "unauthorised gatherings". Omar Derdour (Arabic:عمر دردور), full nameAbou El Kacem Omar Derdour (13 October 1913 – 19 March 2009), was an Algerian Muslim leader,nationalist, and political worker.

A disciple ofAbdelhamid Ben Badis, he was active in the Islamic reformation of Algeria and theAlgerian War of Independence. He directed theFriends of the Manifesto and Liberty Party's (in French:Amis du Manifeste et de la Liberté, AML) Federation inConstantine, and was a member of the Central Committee and Deputy of the Constantine region from 1947 to 1951.
