The 2020s Portal

The2020s (pronounced "twenty-twenties" or "two thousand [and] twenties"; shortened to "the '20s" and also known as "The Twenties") is the currentdecade that began on 1 January 2020, and will end on 31 December 2029.

The 2020s began with theCOVID-19 pandemic. The first reports ofthe virus were published on 31 December 2019, though thefirst cases are said to have appeared nearly a month earlier. The pandemic led toa global economic recession,a sustained rise in global inflation for the first time since the 1970s, anda global supply chain crisis.

Several anti-governmentdemonstrations andrevolts occurred in the late2010s and early 2020s, including a continuation of those inHong Kong againstextradition legislation;protests against certain local, state and national responses to the COVID-19 pandemic;others around the world, particularly in theUnited States, againstracism andpolice brutality; one inIndia againstagriculture and farming acts; one inIsrael againstjudicial reforms; another inIndonesia against theomnibus law on jobs; protests and strikes inFrance againstpension reform;political crises inPeru,Bangladesh,Armenia, andThailand; and many inBelarus,Eswatini,Myanmar,Afghanistan,Sri Lanka,Iran,China,Russia, andVenezuela against various forms of governmental jurisdiction,corruption andauthoritarianism; along with citizenriots inJapan, theUnited States, andBrazil in an attempt to overturnelection results. The world population grew to over 8 billion people, and in 2023,India overtookChina as themost populous country in the world.

Ongoingmilitary conflicts include theMyanmar civil war, theEthiopian civil conflict, theKivu conflict, theMali War, theYemeni civil war, theSomali Civil War,Sudanese civil war, theSyrian civil war, theRusso-Ukrainian War, and theGaza war. The year 2021 saw thewithdrawal of U.S. troops fromAfghanistan and thefall of Kabul to theTaliban, ending nearly20 years of war in Afghanistan. TheRussian invasion of Ukraine became the largest conventional military offensive inEurope sinceWorld War II, resulting in arefugee crisis, disruptions toglobal trade, and an exacerbation of economicinflation. In 2023, aHamas-led attack marked the first invasion ofIsrael since1948, triggering anIsraeli invasion of the Gaza Strip, aPalestinian territory. The invasion has led to the displacement of nearly all 2.3 million Gaza residents, ahumanitarian crisis, afamine, and apolio epidemic, sparking globalprotests against Israel. In 2024, a quick and renewedrebel offensive during theSyrian civil war led to the toppling ofBashar al-Assad and thefall of the Assad regime. On 18 June 2023,Titan, asubmersible operated by the American tourism and expeditions companyOceanGate,imploded during an expedition to view thewreck of theTitanic in theNorth Atlantic Ocean off the coast ofNewfoundland, Canada. Aboard the submersible wereStockton Rush, the Americanchief executive officer of OceanGate;Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a French deep-sea explorer andTitanic expert;Hamish Harding, a British businessman;Shahzada Dawood, a Pakistani-British businessman; and Dawood's son, Suleman.

Communication betweenTitan and itsmother ship,MV Polar Prince, was lost 1 hour and 33 minutes into the dive. Authorities were alerted when it failed to resurface at the scheduled time later that day. After the submersible had been missing for four days, aremotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) discovered a debris field containing parts ofTitan, about 500 metres (1,600 ft) from thebow of theTitanic. The search area was informed by theUnited States Navy's (USN)sonar detection of an acoustic signature consistent with an implosion around the time communications with the submersible ceased, suggesting thepressure hull had imploded whileTitan was descending, resulting in the instantaneous deaths of all five occupants. Carpenter in 2016

Sabrina Annlynn Carpenter (born May 11, 1999) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She gained prominence starring on theDisney Channel seriesGirl Meets World (2014–2017), and signed with theDisney-owned Hollywood Records. She released her debut single, "Can't Blame a Girl for Trying" in 2014, followed by the studio albumsEyes Wide Open (2015),Evolution (2016),Singular: Act I (2018), andSingular: Act II (2019).

Carpenter moved toIsland Records in 2021 and released her fifth studio album,Emails I Can't Send (2022) which was supported by the singles "Nonsense" and "Feather". She also opened forTaylor Swift onthe Eras Tour (2023–2024). Her sixth studio album,Short n' Sweet (2024), debuted atop theBillboard 200, produced the top-three Hot 100 singles "Espresso", "Please Please Please" and "Taste", and also earned twoGrammy Awards.
