The 2020s Portal

The2020s (pronounced "twenty-twenties" or "two thousand [and] twenties") is the currentdecade that began on 1 January 2020 and will end on 31 December 2029.

During the early part of this decade, theworld population grew from 7.7 billion to over 8.2 billion people. In 2023,India overtookChina to become themost populous country in the world. TheCOVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath marked the early 2020s. The first reports ofthe virus were published on 31 December 2019, though thefirst cases are said to have appeared nearly a month earlier. The pandemic led toa global economic recession,sustained rise in global inflation, andsupply chain crisis. TheWorld Health Organization declared the virus aglobal state of emergency. With multipleextreme weather events andecological crises continuing to escalate, several world leaders have called the 2020s the "decisive decade" forclimate action. The years 2023 and 2024 both broke yearlyglobal temperature records, with 2024 breaching1.5 °C abovepre-industrial levels.

Politically, the 2020s marked a period ofdemocratic backsliding in countries such as theUnited States,India, andIsrael, while previously authoritarian nations such asRussia orChina witnessed a further slide intototalitarianism. The decade is also marked by the rise ofright-wing populist and anti-democratic movements across the world, such asGiorgia Meloni'sBrothers of Italy, which formed the first far-right government inItaly since thefall of Benito Mussolini's fascist dictatorship;Javier Milei'sLa Libertad Avanza inArgentina, whichelected the firstlibertarian head of state in the world;Alternative for Germany, which became the leading opposition party inGermany after the2025 German federal election; and theRepublican Party in the United States shifting towardsnational conservatism. The 2020s also saw a decline of establishment politics as centrist parties, such as theDemocratic Party's defeat in the2024 United States elections, orEmmanuel Macron'sRenaissance losing to the left-wingNew Popular Front and the far-rightNational Rally in the2024 French legislative election.

Anti-governmentdemonstrations andrevolts occurred, such as theGen Z protests including the "Asian Spring" inAsian countries, predominantly led by the eponymousGeneration Z, in response toinequality, decliningstandards of living,corruption,democratic backsliding andauthoritarianism. Social media has been a common tool for activism and coordination.Protests against responses to COVID-19,against racism and police brutality by theBlack Lives Matter movement, and against various forms of governmental jurisdiction,corruption, and authoritarianism occurred; along with citizen riots throughout theUnited States andBrazil attempting to overturn election results, seen by supporters as stolen, taking place. Amongdemocracies in 2024, its elections saw 80% ofincumbent parties lose support worldwide, as with the2024 United States presidential election. From January to April 2025, the overall average effective US tariff rate rose from 2.5% to an estimated 27%—the highest level in over a century. After changes and negotiations, the overall average effective tariff rate was 16.8% as of November 2025. US tariff revenue was $287 billion in 2025, a 192% increase from 2024.

UnderSection 232 of the 1962Trade Expansion Act, Trump raisedsteel,aluminum, andcopper tariffs to 50%.
