History

[edit]

The first issue ofPopular Photography was published in 1937[6]. It was based in New York City[7] and owned by several companies during its lifetime, includingZiff Davis.[7][non-primary source needed]

In 1989,Diamandis Communications purchasedModern Photography, a smaller rival ofPopular Photography, and merged the magazines increasing circulation to between 500,000 and 689,000.[8][9][10]

Diamandis was purchased byHachette Filipacchi Media U.S. in 1988, which subsequently sold the magazine toBonnier Corporation in 2009.[11] The magazine's lastpublisher was Steven B. Grune and its lasteditor-in-chief was Miriam Leuchter.[12]

In early March 2017, the magazine folded due to declining advertising revenue from the consumer camera industry.[13] The March/April 2017 issue was its last. In May 2017, Bonnier was offering to fulfill PopPhoto subscriptions by sending other magazines.[14]

PopPhoto soft-relaunched as an online-only publication in June 2018, and officially relaunched in December 2021.[15][non-primary source needed]
