Popponesset Spit is aspit betweenPopponesset Bay andNantucket Sound. Thebarrier peninsula extends for about one mile (1.6 km) from the community ofPopponesset inMashpee onCape Cod inMassachusetts and is part of the coastline known asPopponesset Beach.[1][2][3][4]The tip of the peninsula is owned by theMassachusetts Audubon Society while the landward end is owned by Save Popponesset Bay.[5][6]
The peninsula is now significantly shorter than seen in theBarnstable County survey of 1880. Portions of the shore have been stabilized withriprap to deter furthererosion. Most of this work was done immediately afterHurricane Bob which in 1992 had opened an inlet through the beach. The peninsula is home tobird sanctuary and other conservation projects[7] that prevent disturbance of thepiping plover, an endangered species, andterns.[8][9]
