Popcorn chicken is a dish consisting of small, bite-sized pieces ofchicken (about the size of popped corn kernels) that have been breaded andfried. The idea was originally developed byKFC in 1991, but heavily inspired by fried chickenstreet food inTaiwan. The dish has since been adopted by many restaurants with fried chicken items.
Popcorn chicken was invented byfood technologist Gene Gagliardi, who also inventedSteak-umm.[1] It was test-marketed in the United States from March 1992, and was launched nationwide by September of that year.[1] It has been periodically available in KFC outlets. It was re-introduced in the US in 1998, and again in 2001.[2] It was re-introduced once again in 2015, under the name "KFC Popcorn Nuggets".[citation needed]
It is also available in theUK,Ireland,Canada,Australia,Malaysia,Singapore,New Zealand andGreece.[3][4][5][6][7] As of 2018, it is also available in theNetherlands andBelgium;[8] it has been available inItaly since 2019.[9] It is also available inIndia, where it is marketed as "Chicken Popcorn".
